headphone jack says it's unplugged in windows 8.1

I have read a number of threads on this issue. My HP running windows 8.1 with IDT High Definition Audio CODEC consistently tells me that my headphones are unplugged in both the front and back audio ports of my desktop. I thought getting windows 8.1 on my new desktop would enable me to have audio. Apparently not so far.

I don't know what to do that I haven't done, but I'm not some computer tech guy.

I restarted the computer. I reinstalled the IDT drivers. I checked that they were up to date. I tried the troubleshooting method through windows that kept telling me that the headphones/speakers were unplugged. Okay, that's not true. The headphones work. Devise manager had no yellow exclamation marks.

So what's left to do? Buy windows 7 for $100 and reinstall it on this computer to so I can have sound and an operating system that's not infuriating?

I don't think this is due to some virus I managed to get in record time with minimal use of this computer. So what's next to do? Anything? I'm pretty sure I'm going to need buy windows 7 on ebay.

Advice?

The windows troubleshoot method also told me that there was nothing else wrong that they could detect other than my headphones not being plugged in, in case that wasn't evident from what I wrote above.

I also don't have realtek or whatever that thing is that gets referenced when people post about this problem.

Could this relate to having bought some cheap monitor on ebay that says (analogue) and was like $33? Is this a virus?

Windows 8 on my previous laptop had this clever habit of periodically disabling my mousepad so I had to carry around an external mouse. Is this a windows 8.1 glitch or a virus?

You are all over the place with your posts. Would help to know exactly some of your system specs.

Yeah, I am. Sorry about that. My processor: AMD A6-7400K Radeon R5, 6 Compute Cores; 2C+4G 3.5GHz 6.00GB RAM (4.93 usable) Windows 8.1, 64-bit, x64 based processor

Let me know if you had anything else in mind when you asked about the system specs.

Also, I don't know if the following is relevant to the problem, but I'll share in case it is:

I had hooked up my computer to my LED TV originally and got it play sound through the headphone jack on the front of comp. But then my computer shortly after stopped displaying on my TV when it was plugged in through a high end amazon transition cable that connected to the comp's VGA port to the TV's HDMI port. Since my comp wasn't displaying on my LED TV after a week or so of being hooked up, I eventually disabled the connection to the TV and hooked it up to the monitor tonight. Now the computer consistently turns on and displays on the monitor (using a different port, I forget what that port is called, if it matters), but neither audio port (in front or back) will play sound or register that either working headphones or speakers are plugged into it. (This was probably unnecessary information, but I'm sharing in case something there helps someone figure out what happened.)

Motherboard make/model would help along with sound card/chip model. HDMI audio is a function of the graphics driver, non-HDMI audio is a function of the sound card/chip. So it could be a driver problem with either graphics or sound.

Your confusion on cables and ports doesn't help. Going to have a hard time narrowing something down without knowing specifics. Why would you be using some kind of transition cable from VGA to television HDMI? Why not a straight HDMI from computer to television? I'm having a very hard time figuring out just what you have going.

I will reply writing out what I understand all the specs to be tonight when I get home.

In the meantime, this is a link to a very in-depth description of my motherboard:

Motherboard Specifications, H-RS880-uATX (Aloe) HP Pavilion Elite HPE-500z CTO Desktop PC | HP® Support

Here's a link to the rest of my specs:

HP Pavilion Elite HPE-500z Product Specifications and Configurable Options HP Pavilion Elite HPE-500z CTO Desktop PC | HP® Support

And the reason I didn't use an hdmi to hdmi cord is bc I don't have an hdmi port despite being under the impression that I would have one. VGA ports don't carry sound is my understanding so my graphics card will have nothing to do with sound.

Again, in case those links don't describe all my specs for some reason or don't work when you click on them, I will write out all my specs when I get home late tonight.

Thank you for any and all help!!

Mike
