Noise/Buzzing Heard in Headphones when Sound Unmuted

Hi everyone,

I have an interesting problem: On my laptop (Lenovo Y510p) I can hear a buzzing/whistling/noise sound while my headphones are plugged in. The problem goes away when I mute my sound, but this buzzing can be heard while booting as well.

This led me to believe that my problem is simply a hardware issue, but I have a dual-boot setup with Ubuntu Linux on another partition where the sound works perfectly (i.e. no buzzing/whistling sound), which is interesting because it is using the exact same hardware.

I've tried: Reinstalling the audio driver and using different headphones. Neither gets rid of the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'd be happy to provide more information.

Do you have the correct sound driver installed? If you only have the "High Definition Audio Codec" installed, that is only the generic Windows installed sound driver and not the correct one. Although the driver is not an issue when booting.

I reinstalled the driver from the manufacturer's website, but I still have the problem.

Is the problem only with headphones? Do you get that on the built in Laptop speakers?

Ubuntu uses a different driver(s) so it may still be there just not heard in Linux.

Do you have any other external devices connected to the PC? Does this do it when on Battery only and the AC adapter not plugged in?

(I have a Lenovo Ideapad Z560).

As far as I can tell, I can't hear the buzzing through my speakers.

The only other devices plugged in are my mouse and AC adapter. The problem persists when unplugging either of them.

Do you hear the noise when only the BIOS is active?

I hear it as soon as I boot up my computer, and it continues into Windows 8. If I boot into Ubuntu instead, it cuts out instead.

So, you hear it when you first boot, but once Linux boots you do not hear it, but if you continue with the boot into Windows you still hear it. That suggests its an internal hardware caused problem, but what is Linux doing to suppress it???

May not even be the sound driver, could be some other device but it causes the sound. What is different between Windows and Linux? Are all the same devices used in Linux? Look at Linus and see if some device (or devices) that are used in Windows are not used in Linux.
