Headset / speakers conflict

Hi there!

I've just finished building my first PC, but I have some sound problems.
I want to have my speaker set as the main audio output, so I've plugged it in the back of the PC, in the audio outlet of the motherboard (Gigabyte G1.Sniper B5). But when I play a game, I want to use my headset, so I plug it in the front of the PC, into the audio outlet of the case itself (CM 690 III).
When I plug in only the headphones or only the speaker set, there is no problem at all. But when I plug in both, things get weird. The audio switches correctly to the headphones, but then stops after a few seconds, and when I take out the headphones plug, the sound doesn't return to the speakers. This happens both in games and on YouTube videos (page refresh doesn't help either). However, the "test this audio device"-sound from Windows does play when I test it, so.. yeah...

Can anyone help me set this up correctly? I would be very grateful!! :)

Nick

Welcome to the Win 8 forum.

Sounds like a possible problem with the case front panel jacks or cabling. Many cases have two audio plugs for the front panel headphone/mic jacks, an "AC97" and an "HD Audio" connectors. Use the HD Audio Connector.

But, it still sounds like a problem with the front panel jacks or cabling.

I've built several desktop PC's and have had problems with several front panels.

Also, please fill in the "My System Specs". Helps us to try and help you.

Hey, thanks for your reply!

I have used the HD audio when connecting the front plug. So any idea what else the problem could be?

Edit: I've filled in my system specs ;)

The most obvious issue, although may not be all of the problem is you do not have the sound driver for your hardware installed. You show "High Definition Audio Device" which in most cases is the generic, basic function, Windows installed sound drivers.

According to the listing on the Gigabyte site, you have RealTek HD Audio, so install the RealTek HD Audio Codec (sound driver).
GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1150 - G1.Sniper B5 (rev. 1.x)

The second High Definition Audio Device listed in the Device Manager is most likely the generic Windows driver for the video card's HDMI audio. Go to AMD.com and download and install the correct AMD Catalyst and driver for your video card.

After these are installed, reboot the PC and then see how the sound and especially the front panel acts.

Thanks!
That does seem to fix the problem, great!

Just one more question (I know, I'm greedy): in the Realtek HD Audio Manager the Speakers and the Headphones are listed as one single audio output tab. Do you know if it's possible to list the rear and front outputs as two seperate audio devices? My right speaker is placed a lot further away from the pc, so I'd like to set up the speakers to give the right speaker a bit more volume. Unfortunately, right now this also applies to the headset, and it would be quite bothersome to change the settings each time I plug a headset in or out.

Wie geht es Ihnen?

I don't know if the option in the Device Advanced Settings for separate front and back will do what you want or not. If not you are probably sunk, Windows only allows one Default Audio Playback device, at one time. (see my Audio Manager screenshot).

Also, go to the Sound Panel, Recording section and set the System Mixer as the default recording device. The System Mixer is needed if you ever want to record streaming audio from the Internet. Go to the Recording Section, if the System Mixer is shown, enable it and make it the default. If it is not showing, RIGHT click in a blank area in that panel and then Click to Show Disabled Devices and Disconnected Devices. Stereo Mix should now show and you can enable it and make it the Default Recording Device.

Here is my Recording Panel:
