Problem with HDMI Audio - Seems to go into a sleep mode

Hi,

I have Windows 8.1 x64 and the following:

Radeon HD5450
Samsung TV connected via HDMI to graphics card
AMD HDMI High Definition Audio Device
Realtek HD audio

I have a strange problem that has not always been there but just recently if I don't have any sounds for about 5 minutes the HDMI audio seems to go into some sort of suspended mode and when I click on (generate) a sound (either system or music etc) it takes about 30 seconds for the sound to actually appear (manifest itself) through the Samsung TV speakers.

At first I thought it might be some conflict with the Realtek HD audio so I have disabled this (mobo built-in sound) in the BIOS and uninstalled the realtek drivers. This did not help.

I then thought it was probably an update to the Sound drivers or the graphics drivers for the ATI / AMD Sound card. I have installed the latest catalyst drivers and this did not help. I then fully uninstalled the catalyst drivers including the HDMI Audio and installed an earlier version 9.2.00 from 2012. This did not help either.

I just cannot get to the bottom of it and wondered if anyone else has this issue or can help.

The only Playback Audio Device I have in the Sound settings is Digital Audio (HDMI) and I have tried disbling all audio enhancements. This did not help.

Please note that this happens even if I am using the computer (i.e. the screen can be on all of the time and it still happens after a few minutes).

Other things I have tried:

Power Config - disabled Link State Power Management for the PCIe card

One think I have observed (and I am not sure if this is a symptom or a cause) - The "Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation" process uses about 3-4% CPU while the 30 seconds or so elapses between the sound being invoked and it playing through the speakers. the rest of the sstem is relatively in idle. I can reproduce this by clicking on the sound and adjusting the volume a tad. It is meant to make an immediate "bing" sound to show the sound level is clicked or changed.

If I wait the 30 seconds then the sound eventually comes and then if I click on it again (or do other sound related things) then the sounds are instantaneous. Its only of I leave it 5 minutes or so with no sound activity. If I wait, say, 2 minutes the sound is instant too so long as their has been a sound event in the prior 5 minutes or so.

Its driving me nuts!!

Cheers,
Paul

Is this a home built or manufacturer made computer? I would start by uninstalling all audio drivers and delete if it gives you the option then reboot and let windows do its thing. See if any better. If not, go to manufacturer site and download/install stock drivers.

Hi There,

Its a home built machine. Been good for ages (at least 6 months with Windows 8.1 (and 4 years with W7x64). Motherboard has latest drivers and BIOS and I have completely uninstalled the Realtek sound (and disabled it in bios) and I uninstalled the AMD HDMI sound and let the catalyst reinstall it with both the very latest drivers and then with the drivers from 2009. On each occasion I uninstalled the old drivers first then rebooted.

I have also just run latency monitor and this was showing no issues either during a sound event that worked or one of the sound events that take 30 seconds to make a sound.

Not too keen on reinstalling windows or rolling back windows to a previous time just yet (but I may have to reinstall if I cant get to the bottom of this).

This is why its driving me nuts.

Cheers,
Paul

Can't rule out hardware issues either. Could create a restore point then roll back to an older one and see if any difference.

PS: May be grabbing at straws and nothing to do with it but have you done a sfc /scannow to make sure your system files are good?

Hi,

Done and SFC /scannow and all was good. I have noticed however that since "downgrading" the graphics and Audio drivers from ATI/AMD/Catalyst to the 2012 version the delay seems to have dropped to about 3-10 seconds as opposed to 30.

I did also apply Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 update rollup: June 2014 update from Windows update last night so it is possible this had an effect too.

Most odd!!!

Cheers,
Paul

Hi,

Useful stuff. Thanks for that. Unfortunately my Mobo is a little old and is not officially supported on Windows 8 so no drivers from Gigabyte. I guess its all pointing to a new mobo!!

Cheers,
Paul
