Did the headphone jack ever work? Is the headset you are using a known good headset?

If the unit is still under warranty, best to contact Toshiba. If its a hardware problem (and under warranty) only Toshiba can get it corrected.

I worked an exact same problem recently with another user. They decided to do a new (clean) install of the OS and drivers. I haven't heard back on whether that fixed it.

Reinstalling drivers, and several other operations failed to fix the issue.

as this is a fairly new install (less than 4 days) and the issue started upon installing a windows update is there a way i can remove all audio drivers from the machine and retry? i installed all the drivers on this machine including video and touchpad and this is the only issue. if not is there a way i can preserve my applications through a install like when i transitioned from w7, its really a pain even with ninite.

As it started after an update, what was the update? 8.1 or 8.1.1?

Reinstalling, again, is a last resort. I don't like to tell people to just "reinstall" when there are problems. I mentioned the other case because it was exactly the same - worked with Linux but not Windows.

Two things to try. (1) go to the Device Manager and uninstall the RealTek sound, DO NOT uninstall the drivers, and then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the Sound. If there were a corruption between Windows and the sound this will fix that.
(2), Uninstall the Sound, as per #1 AND the drivers. Restart the PC and Windows will install the generic, basic function, HD Audio Codec. Then try the headphone and see if it works. If it does, try installing the latest HD Audio Codec direct from RealTek as it has the latest Windows 8 drivers. Realtek

so looks like the older drivers worked fine and fixed the problem. i did have to uninstall the other drivers but lesson learned. pick drivers that match your model, new is not always better.
