I have been running into this problem about once a day, the sound will completely stop working and im able to change it to my usb headset and it works but when i switch it back to speakers it still doesn't work. I found that going to task manager and restarting the Audiosrv service will bring the sound back. I have the newest realtek drivers(for asrock z77 xtreme 4 mobo) from their site that were literally updated this month. I have all the windows updates and no program in particular seems to make this happen. It can happen waking from sleep or just when i close a game and try to play music. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Games usually have their own sound configuration (to use with the PC's sound) and if they do not release them, or release them correctly, after exiting the game it can cause the problem you are having (and other problems). Its not a problem with the PC or the PC sound card and drivers, its a problem with the game not releasing/restoring operations when the game is closed.

Look at all you have running. Some program you have running could be interfering.

This just happened to me too, however in my situation I upgraded to AVG 2015... After the restart I noticed my audio icon in the taskbar had a red X. I thought I was mute, but it turns out Audiosrv service is stopped. I cannot start the audio service!!! What the hell???
