Solved Major sound problem with new laptop and Windows 8

Erratically the sound (which is not always available) will accentuate to a high-pitched scream which necessitates closing the ears and turning down the volume control which is not maximal.

With the speakers volume control at about 30%, tapping on the betzel or the screen is greatly amplified through the speakers.

At other times no sound is available when music is playing. I accomplished this by trying to do away with the obnoxious Sound Blaster X-Fi MB3 and Xbox which come on full-screen and allow no other activities. Windows key and D gives me back the desktop but the music stops and the player goes away.

I have adjusted what seemed like every possible sound variable without effect. Interestingly I had similar problems using an older laptop which is one of the reasons I purchased the new laptop. This has to mean that I am the problem or possibly my environment. I do use a Revolabs USB microphone and on occasion, unplugging the microphone has ended the loud screaming. On other occasions the screaming noise is present when the microphone is not plugged in.

I’ll greatly appreciate any advice.

Laptops have a built in mic and if its enabled you will get the feedback ("High pitched scream"). It wasn't the SoundBlaster Xfi MB which is a software enhancement to your sound chip, and does provide better sound than the basic sound chip on the speakers.

I would put the PC back to the original configuration, disable the built in mic (and unplug the USB mic). That should fix the feedback problem. Only plug in the USB mic when you want to use it and then either mute the PC speakers or set them to a very low level so you will not get the feedback.
