Solved "The Device is being used by another application"

Hi There,

I'v been trying to get my new USB sound card (Roland Duo Capture EX) working with Pro-Tools 10, but when I choose the Roland as the playback engine on starting up ProTools, I get an error stating that it is in use by aother application.

Also, when I change the sample rate in the "Sound" window for that sound card, I get the following: "The Device is being used by another application"...

Is there some way in Windows 8 to check what applications are hogging the card?

Any help would be a great help- This has been grinding my gears for days now!!

Thanks

Crocklip,

Welcome to the forum :)

There is a way to check what application is using your sound card by using the volume control application.

if you press these keys together:

:winkey: + R (this will bring up a run box)

Enter snvdol > then click OK

this application will then show you what application is running and presently using you sound card : for example:

Hope that helps,

Cheers,

Hi Harry,

Thanks a lot for the help! Looking at my volume control, it doesn't look like anything is currently using either of the card (built-in or USB), which means there's probably another reason I'm getting this message.

Can you think of any other reason I'm getting "The device is being used by another application"? I've tried killing any processes that look audio-related and drivers for the sound card are up to date and Win8 compatible.

Thanks,
David

Hey dude. That's my specialty.

You gotta check the box to allow applications to take exclusive control in Playback tab | Double click adapter | Advanced

You should also disable Windows sounds if you're doing any kind of serious recording at all. It's not necessary, but it's how you do.

Also check options in ProTools about it. I don't actually need the above setting when I use Cubase. I could have a million things going at once if I need or want, but of course, your interface is different. Mine is MOTU Traveler. (It's all about the driver too, and MOTU is top of the line.)

Thanks for the tips MasterChief.

I tried it out (amongst all other possible settings combinations!) but still nada. By the way, when I checked in sndvol, it did display the "system sounds" even though I disabled windows sounds, as you suggested.

My mind is officially properly boggled. I've tried everything from re-installing drivers and pro tools to killing processes in task manager in an effort to solve this.

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated....

Try unchecking the setting for it.

Try a different DAW, just for the heck of it. PT10 should be compatible with 3rd party interfaces, but maybe something funky is still going on.

In worse case scenario, I can have a look at the system. Let me know if you'd like to go that route.

Hey Masterchief, Harry,

After much head scratching, I've decided to give up on Pro Tools altogether and try Cubase with the Duo Capture instead... and success! Setting up the interface proved much easier and more effective, in this case.

Thanks a lot for your help... much learned in the process!

You're welcome.

Cubase is the best. The ish. You won't be disappointed on any level.

If you play guitar, see if you can get your hands on Studio Devil, Guitar Rig, TH2 and Amplitube - all VST plugins.

You will die at how awesome they are. The first one is used by a friend of mine that's a world famous dude.

Yeah, so switching to a different DAW is not solving the issue. My duo capture Ex in (Windows 10 now) works in an old copy of FL studio and Ableton live....but not my new protools 12.4. Same issue. And holding n down isn't even opening up anything during the start of PT.
Had the software for days now and haven't heard a single note. Frustrated is an understatement. I get one phone call to support a month. Didn't want to go there yet.
