If you want to put the files on CD to play on a standard traditional CD, then you will need to convert them to .wav files with 44.1 KHz frequency and 16 bit depth.

Tools that come in handy for this are Yamb (to extract audio from video .mp4 file), Goldwave (to convert), SoundForge (more professional option, to covert), CDex (can make .wav or .mp3 files), Nero (to burn to CD Redbook standard).

If you have a CD player that can play .mp3 files as many of today's can, then .mp3 is ok. Check the manual for your CD player if you are not sure.

Before burning, it is a good idea to normalize all files so one is not louder than another. I recommend normalizing all files to average RMS level of -12.5 dB.

WAV files should be avoided like the plague. They are 10 to 20 times the size of MP3 files for the same thing. Here is an example.

WHS, I respect your knowledge to the extreme. I am continuously amazed by some things you show and do, along with SIW2 etc...

But this is very uninformed statement. I will leave it at that. I don't intend arguing, but come on dude. :) I'm not going to point out countless reasons about it.

No argument. I know that in some cases WAV files are required and useful. They are lossless and give the best quality. My only point here was that they are very big - nothing else.

Take PowerPoint for example. Why do they require WAV files for narration. A complete overkill. I put WAV header in front of MP3 files and that works just as well. That makes the .pptx or .ppsx files a lot smaller and more convenient when you upload it.

Peace!!

Ya, ya. You got it right. I am betting that Bosslady wants to play the created CD on a "normal" player, so wav files are needed.

I am guessing that .wav for Powerpoint might have something to do with avoiding licensing for .mp3 or any other proprietary format.

"I put WAV header in front of MP3 files and that works just as well." <<<< This is trick. hah nice.

MP3 song files will play on audio CD players that specifically state they are MP3 compatible. Otherwise standard "audio" CD's (wav) are required.

One "gotcha" on older audio CD players; unless the audio CD is burned at a low speed (generally 12X or lower) many older audio CD players will either not play the CD or will skip. I do a lot of audio CD burning, which my recording studio, and my audio CD burn "standard" is 8X. I burn CD's for singers that sell their CD's at concerts and 8X is "safe". Unfortunately most SATA CD/DVD burners will only go down to 16X and that can be an issue with some audio CD players. I have a bank of 5 USB connected PATA CD burners that I use for production and they will burn at 8X (I can burn 5 CD's at a time using Nero Burning ROM).

I know the reaction to this is always "wrong, wrong" etc...That is gut instinct reaction always.

I have actually studied the engineering behind optical disc burning.

The real truth is that burning at maximum speed is usually the most beneficial for most drives, because they are designed and optimized to work at the rated speed. There is a lot of science behind it, but in simplest terms, all the interwebz that repeatedly say slower this, slower here, are just copying each other and it has become modern day wives' tale.

I've seen in-depth studies of the jitter on all types of burns, and maximum disc speed results in cleanest burn, usually.

But at the end of the day, whatever is tested to work and does not fail your workflow....then really, you can't do better than that.

There is also CDA format for "Music CDs" but is only one supported in very old players (I still have 2 of those and they still work). For burning that kind of CDs I use "Ashampoo Burning Studio ". There is an option "Burn or rip Music" / "Create an Audio CD" which can convert other audio formats (OGG, MP3, WAV, WMA etc.) and burn a CD in that old format.
As far as the speed of burning is concerned, I use mostly Verbatim and Maxell brand of disks, both for CDs and DVDs and have found out that burning CDs at 16x and DVDs at 8x speeds gives me most reliable results. In the beginning I thought that lover speeds would be better but that was not the case. Results may vary with different brands of media and burners.

I and a friend, independently, did very in-depth study on what speed to burn audio CD's. We are in an area with many retirees and see a lot of older audio CD players. We tried many speeds on different audio CD players and both came to the same conclusion that 8X was the safe speed to burn when the CD's will be sold. In fact I have an older JVC (XL F254) 5 disc audio CD player that will not play audio CD's burned over 12X. The Bass player in our band had an old boom box that played CD's and it wouldn't even reliably play burned audio CD's at 8Xs.

I only use high quality (many refer to them as best) Taiyo Yuden Ink Jet printable CD-R's. The Taiyo Yuden discs and slow burn speeds are well accepted in the recording studio industry.

When I was doing support on the Dell user forums (for 10 years) there were many cases of users reporting problems with audio CD's not playing or skipping. We found, in every case, that having the users burn at lower speeds fixed the problems. In addition we also saw many burning problems (data and audio) that were traced back to Memorex CD-R's.

The problem is that there is no 'ordinary cd player ', They all have different capabilities. You may have to experimant a bit. WAV format is probably the safest, but that produces very big files. You will fit less on a CD than with MP3. And if MP3 works on your player, I would take that.
