    Having mic trouble

I just bought my first PC after a decade or so of being a strict Mac person.

I had been using a microphone made for stage use, plugged into my Mac with a USB adaptor. I'm trying to hook it up to my PC but I don't know how to make it work. Everything I find online says to install the driver, but it's not a computer mic so it doesn't have a driver. Does anyone know how to fix this? I intend to use it to record my voice in Sony Acid.

It appears that my computer thinks my microphone is a speaker.

    I have a recording studio (I use Sonar X3).

Usually, USB mic's are "plug and play" and Windows will install the correct driver.

Try another install and see what happens. Plug the mic in, go to the Device Manager. I'm not sure where it will be displayed, possibly under Sound devices. RIGHT click on the entry for the mic to highlight it and then LEFT click "Uninstall". Physically disconnect the mic from the PC and then restart (reboot) the PC. After Windows starts, plug it in and this should be like a complete new install and Windows should detect and reinstall it. Check the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel/Recording Section. The mic should be listed in the recording section. (You should also have the Stereo Mix listed and set as the default recording device - that will allow any recording device to be heard/recorded).

I haven't tried any of those mic to USB adapters, however I have tried some other types and its 50/50 on whether they work or work properly.

As firebird points out, most usb devices are plugnplay, which means the OS's generic built in driver get the usb device working. I use the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Go Pro USB adatper. This device comes with a install disc which contains the the required driver and software needed to use the device.

You may need to look up your USB adapter on their website to see if you need a driver specific for a PC and not MAC. With out the make/model of your USB device, there's not much we can do.

Am I asking for trouble?
I was getting random BSOD's from a driver called US40fs64.sys so I just renamed it to US40fs64.old and things are working OK so far. I can't find any listing of what that driver actually does. Could I hurt my system by renaming it this way? So far, it seems to have helped.
