My system specs are on my profile.

My integrated audio is: Realtek ALC898

I have used both the R2.71 driver from Realtek directly and
Realtek High Definition Audio Driver from MSI both are the latest drivers available for Windows 8 64bit.

When playing music from any media player WMP, VLC, Winamp, etc.. The vocals are very muffled and the bass is way too high.

I have no options of lowering the bass. Changing the Equalizer in the Realtek HD Audio Manager to Treble helps out a little making vocals a tad clearer and dropping the bass.

My speaker system is a Altec Lansing 2.1 external speaker set using auxiliary.

I did not have these issues on Windows 7 64bit. Only experienced the problem on Windows 8.

Any suggestions or ideas?? I am running out of hope! I would prefer not to have to downgrade or get a dedicated sound card.

Win 8 uses the same drivers as Win 7 and should work the same.

What is "Altec Lansing 2.1 external speaker set using auxiliary"? You should be connecting the speaker system to the GREEN speaker jack only.

Do you have any Sound Effects enabled (in the RealTek HD Audio Manager)? Disable any if you do.

Did you install the Intel motherboard chipset drivers? The drivers need installed for proper operation, as one of the main things the drivers do is properly identify all the devices on the motherboard.

I am plugged into the green with the 3.5mm aux.

I have the latest chipset drivers.

I did enable sound effects for treble because the vocals were muffled the the bass was out of control.

I realized the drivers are the same which is why I am so confused on why the audio is out of wack with windows 8 and not win7.

Go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the Realtek sound driver to highlight it and then LEFT click "Uninstall" (do not uninstall the drivers). Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. See if this helps, as this fixes a lot of flakey problems.

Do you have a headset you can try to see how that works? Plug into the rear GREEN speaker jack with the headset.

If its still low and bassy, disconnect the front panel mic/headphone plug at the motherboard and see if that makes any difference. If there was a problem with the front panel cabling or jacks that can cause problems. (You should be using the HD Audio connection to the front panel. Some cases have both HD Audio and AC97 audio connectors and the HD Audio is the preferred).

Thanks for the reply. I will try that when I get home from work. Ill reply with the outcome. Also, my headset is wireless USB. I don't have a headphone using 3.5mm.

USB can make a difference, but try the uninstall/reinstall anyway and see what happens.

You may want to get a cheap analog headset, just for testing. Even one of the cheap earbud types.

Alright bro, I tried practically everything. It is what it is I guess. Perhaps Windows 8.1 has this fixed. I will be trying that over the weekend. Thank you for your help.. much appreciated!

Other than a bad Win 8 install, I doubt that 8.1 will help.

Hello

Had a similar issue that directed me here, bought a second hand set of lansing 2100s.

Shook the house!

I tried updating all the drivers for my MSI hardware, updated chip set for the MSI motherboard...intel, realtek, everything is up to date with the latest.

I couldn't use the realltek HD audio managers equalizer/effects settings until I did this.

But most of all and after still not being able to use my speakers for fear of shaking my house down and having the neighbours going mental.. I found a subwoofer control dial on the back of the subwoofer, and it was turned up to the max!

It took me days to find it, I hadn't noticed it when I got them and just assumed it was a software thing/hardware thing.

They are fine now, and probably some of the power-fullest speakers I've ever heard for a PC in my life!

Does anyone know how or why they wont work when connected to the S/PDIF I did look up S/PDIF on wiki.
