A month or two ago I purchased a desktop computer, dell vostro 200. intel dual core 2.8 with a PNY GTX260 graphics card. I haven't plugged in the earphones at all until now and I noticed this hissing sound. Its pretty loud, I'm not sure why but whenever I move the mouse a tad, there's another sound that joins in. What could it be? I turn the volume to 0 and I still hear the hissing sound.

sounds like a loss of shielding or ground

Try another set of headphones

Your headphone jack may be damaged.

If hiss continues, then disable your microphone

right click the speaker icon, choose recording devices, disable the microphone

could just be dirty, try plugging and unplugging the cable several times and see if it clears up.

if holding the cable to the sides while its plugged in eliminates the hiss then its pretty sure that its broken.

Dell had a problem a couple of years ago with routing of the front panel headphone/mic jack, in an XPS model, that caused noise. Rerouting the cable, in this case away from the hard drive, fixed the problem. Check the routing of the cable in your Vostro and see if that will make any difference.

Was this a new Vostro? The Vostro line was recently discontinued.
