Are you on a system with multiple users?

Are you on as administrator? Or is someone else the administrator? You may not have rights to change that.

Is your sound card working?

Are there any exclaimations in your device manager?

Do you have a sound scheme seleted or is it set to no sound, change sound scheme and hit apply and see if the box is now available.

Ive disabled my sound drivers but my [ ] Play Windows Startup Sound still works, but my > Test button is grayed out, is your test button grayed out as well? or Just the Startup sound box? Im trying to duplicate your issue..
What are the sound drivers called?
Does it just say HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO with no brand name?

That is why it is not allowing you to "test" the sounds - The actual sound drivers must be installed, active and working.

Pull up your Control Panel-Hardware and Sounds. Go to your SOUND.

DO you have an active device? It will have a green checkmark.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Lorrry, Ive tried everything i can think of to replicate your problem, but no matter what I disable that checkbox always remains available to me.

Ive even created registry changes to deny me access to the sound scheme, but no difference. It always works..

Ive searched scores of websites including Microsoft to no avail, many have this problem going back to Win XP, but no solution.

It looks like its just flat out not an option in your windows version, or you are denied access.

What is your windows version? Pro or Pro Media center?

If youre willing to try one more thing, lets start the computer in SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING,. and tell me if its still grayed out.

Ill keep looking, the answer is out there, its just buried..

Lorry, I just found a previous message from you on this forum stating that your Audio services would not start, is that still the case with your current problem or was that another computer?

Ive disabled my audio services in my last post but that did not gray out my logon sounds box either..

Yes.Very odd.
Maybe somebody will provide an answer.

EDIT--

Running:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

in elevated (administrator) command prompt might fix it.
It's worth a try.
It takes a long time to run.Half an hour or maybe more.
Restart after it finishes.
