Hello all,

I wasn't sure where to place this FYI; however, I know many are interested in upgrading their old rigs to Windows 8, and since the integrated sound drivers seem to be a problem area, I decided to share my personal experience in the Sound and Audio Forum.

So, I upgraded my ancient rig (see my specs) to Windows 8 Pro x64 (via a clean install) yesterday and I was delightfully surprised to find that after the initial installation (and applying all Windows Updates to current) all of my devices were working perfectly (including my sound). Now, this came somewhat of a surprise to me because I was all ready to go out and buy a sound card to replace my ancient integrated audio. Anyway, here's a screenshot of the device manager showing the audio drivers that it auto-installed:

In summary, the Windows 8 x64 installation program may have a better catalog of device drivers than previous versions so don't go out and buy that new sound card before you upgrade to see if your integrated audio actually works.

Cheers!
