Solved No sound in Paltalk

Hi,

Thanks in advance for your help.

I use a chat program called Paltalk to play trivia in a chat room. I've had no trouble with Paltalk in the past, with sound or mic....but....I got a new computer during the Christmas holidays (an hp pavilion p7-1459, using Windows 8), and now I can't get sound in the Pal chatrooms. When I run the Audio Test provided in Paltalk, my mic works fine, but I can't hear the "strumming guitar" sound. When I go into a normal Pal room (like trivia), I can see the mic icon next to the person's name on mic, and the text in the room, but there's absolutely no sound. The sound on my computer is great on ALL other programs. The ONLY rooms in Pal that I CAN hear are the Shoutcast Radio rooms (the ones that stream music from radio stations). There, the sound is perfect.

I have asked for help in Paltalk, but they have been on no help. They insist it must be my "settings"....but....if it was my settings, why would I be able to hear in the Shoutcast Radio rooms within Pal?? And, as I have said, in all other programs and sites, the sound on my computer is very nice.

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated, thanks!

Jo

Joontario, You are not alone! I recently purchased an HP PC with Win 8 (64-bit) and IDT Audio. I got the same exact problem, and I also got the same exact result from Paltalk's Help room--No Help at all.

While using Paltalk Scene messenger in a normal chat window, u can tell that there is incoming audio by watching the meter graph by the speaker in the chat window; however, the sound is not recognized or not channeled correctly through to IDT/Windows 8 in order to be heard.

Hopefully, they'll figure it out and fix it soon. Paltalk doesn't seem to have any idea of what's going on. It could be a driver issue, a windows 8 issue, and/or a 64-bit issue. The same messenger is working fine on both Windows XP and Windows 7 32-bit platforms with Realtek Audio (I recently tested it on my old machine).

Thanks for the reply. Sorry you're also having problems with Pal. . I have 64-bit, IDT Audio too. It's a bit frustrating , eh? As you said, hopefully they'll fix it "soon"....but I'm not counting on it. In the meantime, I'll find a new hobby. I've heard people used to read things called "books", so I'll give that a try! Thanks again!

Yvw! I thought it might help a little knowing that you're not the only one with the problem. Yes, it's very frustrating, especially when the tech's don't know what the problem is and hardly address it. For now, I uninstalled Paltalk Scene and am using Paltalk Express at Paltalk Express – Free chat rooms, instant messaging and webcam chat . It's not as good but it will do. Sometimes when you enter a chat room on express, u may not get sound. That's not due to the above mentioned problems, but rather to the net connection. In such a case, exit the room and re-enter it--still no sound, reboot the room again. However, most of the time it works, depending on the server's location and net connection.
Reading BOOKS?!!! Yes, I think I've heard of them sometime ago :D

Problem solved!

Quinko (and anyone else who has this sound problem in Paltalk).....Just thought I'd let you know how to solve the problem. I bought an external sound card and it works perfectly now. I bought a Startech Stereo Audio USB 7.1 External Sound card through Best Buy (also available on Amazon). It cost $39.99. I can now hear in the normal rooms, play music and talk over music. It has a sound mixer.
Just thought I'd pass that on to you, hopefully it'll help.
Thanks again!

Joontario, Although I find it quite ironic to have to buy a sound card for my brand new, expensive HP that's supposed to already do the job, I do find your tip very helpful and worth consideration. I hope that HP/IDT will soon find a better solution than to disappoint their customers like that.

Thank you so much for sharing!

Found the problem! Windows Update IDT CODEC

I just found out what the problems is--by coincidence. My PC ran into trouble and I had to do a system recovery process which rolled back my IDT Audio to the original and old driver.

BAD/INCOMPTIBLE CODEC >>> As it turns out, The new IDT High Def Audio CODEC -- Dated: 10-12-2012 Build: 6.10.6429.0 -- which was offered by Windows Optional Update, was the cause of the problem. It's not compatible with Paltalk. I didn't try other voice chats.

GOOD CODEC >>> My original IDT High Def Audio CODEC -- Dated: 7-24-2012 Build: 6.10.6418.0 works just fine with Paltalk! Too bad I found that out just two days after purchasing a new USB sound card!

So if you did update your IDT Hi Def CODEC via Windows Update, Roll it back to original IDT CODEC that came with your PC and paltalk will work fine on it.

Rolling Back Steps:-

1. Right-click on the speaker in the task bar and click on Playback devices from its menu
2. In the popped-up sound window, click on Speakers/Headphones to select it, and click on Properties.
3. Another window will pop-up, titled: IDT High Definition Audio CODEC Properties--in it, click on Change settings.
4. The window will flash/reopen. Now, click on the Driver tab then click on Roll Back Driver to select your oldest driver by following the instructions in the next window.
5. After all is done, Restart your PC and now you should be able to hear Paltalk's regular chat rooms' audio.

Good Luck!

:dinesh:THANKS FOR THIS SOLUTION! :dinesh:

While assisting my husband with his new HP Envy Phoenix h9-1355, I came across this post yesterday. For WEEKS, we have been talking to myriad tech support people about sound issues, specifically trying to get the default sounds that come with QUICKEN to work!!! So, after taking the optional IDT driver update (yesterday), he lost all sounds. As we headed for bed last night ... I mentioned this post. So, today, after the Super Bowl game, he followed your instructions, he rolled back to the IDT driver version that originally came with his system.

The funny thing is NOW all the sounds are working that he used on his old system, although they did not work for the first MONTH that he has had this new P'OS' (his wording, not mine!).

Over the last 4 days, he has :

  1. done two refreshes, after running into issues with application installs hanging (even though they are win8 apps!) (the second time, after having issues with the reinstall of Office 2010, specifically Outlook).
  2. Got Outlook working correctly, Reinstalled Quicken, and other apps.
  3. Applied the recommended updates to the OS, and the optional sound (?) drivers.
  4. Uninstalled the sound driver, per your instructions, and
  5. Now: SOUND!

;) I told him not to install anything else for at least a day or two!!!! ;)

:dinesh:THANKS FOR THIS SOLUTION! :dinesh:

You're very welcome! I'm so glad I could help. :)

I'm disappointed at Microsoft for posting drivers that are not fully tested/functional in Windows Update. As a major OS company, they should test each new driver in all aspects before offering it as an update even if it were classified as "optional".

By the way, sometimes you do need to do a system refresh twice to get everything working right. HP is funny that way! The first time I rolled back, Beats audio controller didn't work right--in "Listening Experience", the sliders didn't work. Second refresh, all is fine again :)

I just reported the issue to HP's online Tech Support, and they will relay it to HP and IDT (as promised). Hopefully they will fix/update their latest CODEC version soon.
