HDMI audio "Not plugged in", unselectable

I've googled the crap out of this for a week, and can't find a fix...

I recently upgraded from W7 to W8, and now my HDMI audio is acting up.

I have only ever used my Samsung TV as a monitor.
When switching from headset to tv audio I used to click the sound icon and select "set as default"

Now I CANNOT select "digital audio (HDMI)" from playback devices, as it is grayed out, and says "not plugged in"

Strangest part is that if I restart my computer, it works just fine, and then somewhere from 30 minutes to 2h it suddenly stops working. It doesn't seem to matter what I am doing, watching a movie on VLC, netflix, or even just working on a speadsheet.

Also noteworthy: girlfriend has exactly the same computer, same problem!

I've tried updating/(un)installing the latest drivers from AMD, and Realtek, as well as re-installing windows.

Windows 7 64 (upgraded to W8 64)
AMD FX 8120 8 core processor
AMD Radeon HD 7670 2 GB
Aspire M3450
Samsung 46" LCD TV

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this, any suggestions would be appreciated.

The video card detects if something is plugged in or not. As it works for a while and then stops, suggests one of the media players or programs could be causing the problem. Watch it closely with whatever you are doing and see if you can determine what program (if it is a program) is causing the problem.

AMD has older version drivers on their site, instead of the latest driver, try an older version and see if that makes any difference. I have an AMD Radeon HD7770 video card in my system and do not have that problem. But, I don't use Netflix or VLC.

Ah the AMD Radeon.... Used to be ATI Radeon, which included a membership in the "driver of the week" club. I had always suffered through using ATI video cards, so I tried an AMD Radeon video card when I built my current PC, and the HDMI NEVER worked right. I took it back and got an NVIDIA card, which worked perfectly from the start. I've never looked back.

So I have a AMD HD 7770, my monitor is on DVI port and I plugged in an audio receiver on HDMI port, but it says HDMI audio not plugged in, although it was identified as a second display. Why isn't this working? Do I need Eyefinity for this?

I don't think the HDMI audio will show active unless there is a true HDMI component (TV or monitor) connected to it. Said another way, I don't think it will work for just audio and a receiver. But I could be wrong.
