HDMI Audio Device "Not Plugged In" post Windows 8 upgrade.

Hi all,

Recently upgraded my Dell Latitude E6420 to Windows 8.

When I attempt to use my Sony TV as a second monitor via HDMI cable, I no longer get audio. Cable is fine and worked previous to upgrade.

Video comes up fine. In "Playback Devices" (with both "Show Disabled" and "Show Disconnected" devices checked), Digital Audio is greyed out and unable to be selected as a default device - simply says "Not plugged in".

I've tried updating various drivers, but to no avail.

Display adapters:
  • Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000
  • NVIDIA NVS-4200M

Have been reading through forums etc. for the past few days, but no joy. Very frustrating.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

When you plug in an HDMI cable, the HDMI becomes the default audio playback device, rather than the "Speakers" (the PC sound card). You will have to manually change the default playback device back to your speakers in the Sound Panel.

Thanks fireberd,

Apologies - I may not have been clear. The HDMI audio is not working at all. PC speakers work fine. The playback device isn't even recognizing the HDMI cable as plugged in, even when video is working on the Sony TV.

HDMI should be set as default audio playback device, not "digital" Audio.

The Dell users forum may be a better place to post since there are those there that are more familiar with your Dell.

Petea, I understand what your saying, seen this happen many times. Especially via upgrade path.
Please note I take no responsibility for your actions, I am only providing my advice for free since it's a holiday and I have holiday blues.

So, to get started. I am assuming you are running as a USER and not as an ADMINISTRATOR
So these steps are for people running in USER mode.
1) winkey + D to go to desktop mode
2) winkey + X to open menu
3) Select "Command Promt (Admin)"
4) type in -> devmgmt.msc , and hit enter
5) In the device manager under "Sound, video and game controllers" right click on each Audio device, except for any that say "Mic" and hit uninstall.
6) scroll to the top of the device manager and look under "Audio inputs and output" and make sure that you don't see any "Digital Audio (HDMI)" ...etc... entries. If you do, right click on these and uninstall them.
7) Winkey+I --> select the power button on the bottom right and select restart.

See if that fixes it....
Oh! one more thing, unplug the HDMI cable before you restart and LEAVE IT unplugged until the system is completely finished booting and finding all the audio devices. Restart one more time, log in, and then plug in your HDMI cable and see if it recognizes it.

I too have been having this issue and I have tried the above solution and it works for a while then a few weeks later I get the same issue again. The only way I have found is I have to stop everything I am in the middle of and restart just to switch audio back through the TV. My problem is I have to use my computer speakers, which I can plug my headphones into, at night not to disturb the neighbors in the next room. I then use the TV for my sound during the day. The whole time I am using the TV for my video and never have issues with the video just the audio. My question is how to solve this issue more than just a temp fix?

Sounds like it could be audio card/controller issue possibly even on graphics side. HDMI is a combination of both. Also where is HDMI output coming from, Intel or discrete graphics card? System info would help.

What do you mean HDMI output? I plug the HDMI from laptop to TV. when I go into playback devices the TV is mentioned as AMD High Definition Audio Device.

That means your HDMI audio and video is coming from the APU graphics on your laptop. Could be a graphics driver issue or maybe the signal is dropping out between the laptop and TV thus defaulting back to laptop audio. Do you have the latest graphics drivers from HP and are you sure your HDMI cable is good including connections?

well I checked both windows updates and HP updates and both are up to date. I tried a second HDMI cable still same issue. I tried second port on tv so the only thing is the port on the laptop and don't know how to check that. As far as signal don't know how to check that.
