Speaker and headphone together

Hi...in my WinXP, i was able to use both headphones and speakers together, but here in Windows 8 I find the option to only use one of them at at time. Is there a setting which can play automatically with headphone/speaker whichever is plugged in or do I need to change the default everytime I plug in a device? Thanks

With a Dell you are, in most cases, limited to the available Dell sound drivers. Non-Dell sound drivers in most cases either do not work or do now work correctly. For example the generic Windows/Microsoft installed HD Audio Codec sound driver is just a basic function driver and does not have any extra options such as speaker configuration.

Download the available Dell Vista/Win7 driver (it will work for Win8) four your specific model and then check to see if you have the speaker option. This assumes there is a Dell driver for your model. You failed to include your Dell model number so I can't check or link you directly to the driver. Dell drivers are at www.support.dell.com

I'm finding that as I plug in headphones, sometimes it will switch audio to the headphones, sometimes it will not. If I go into audio properties and change the default device, it seems to fix it. But it should always recognize the change. Is that your situation as well?

Hi "firebred"..thank you for your suggestions, but i have an assembled system with just the screen being dell's. This system with all the same hardware used to work well with XP and used to play sound whether headphones or speakers are plugged in automatically without any need to change the default device.

Hi "thirdstring"..yes that is the problem, it does fix it when the default device is changed, but shouldnt that happen automatically? the same system used to do that automatically when it was running winXP.

vvs, yes, I agree it should happen automatically. Actually, my system has gotten worse switching sounds from the built in laptop speakers to the headphones when they get plugged in. I'm still working on it, though someone updated drivers and seemed to work for them.

Okay, I just updated my drivers for the "High Definition Audio" and it now is back to recognizing when I change devices (i.e. unplug headphones). Must have lost the drivers for awhile or something. Adding bluetooth headphones makes it a little more fun, but works reasonably well so far.

My "High Definition Audio" says it is up to date..but problem not solved..!

My HD Audio changed to Realtek High Def Audio after it updated. Looks like yours is a custom built system. Assuming it's onboard audio, you might want to go to intel's website and see if they have any different drivers - even beta drivers may be good. Beyond that, I don't have too many thoughts. You might check the date on your drivers. (Mine is 8/21/2012) What I read is that the Windows audio system is significantly different in 8, so if the drivers were written before Win8 was RTM, I can see how it could be an issue.
