No sound after waking from sleep mode in Windows 8

I'm getting no sound after resuming from S1 sleep mode in Windows 8 and the only way to fix this is to either physically unplug the audio cable and plug it back in or restart the computer. I tried the audio troubleshooter and it could not find any problems and there is nothing to fix. I need to reconnect the audio cable every time the computer wakes up from sleep unless I restart the computer. I have an EVGA X58 motherboard with a Realtek ALC889 audio chip. I'm using the latest R2.70 audio driver from EVGA which is the same version as on the Realtek website.

I am having this exact same problem. I too, have recently upgraded to Windows 8 and updated my Bios. I also updated my Realtek drivers to the newest drivers. Oddly, I think my problem occurred after the updates. I do not think it was doing this using the Windows 8 stock driver. So it was either the new bios update or the Realtek driver (High Definition Driver (3.50) R2.70) update that introduced the problem. I may try rolling back the driver and see if the problem persists.

UPDATE: 24 hours later, I can report that rolling back to the Windows 8 driver for my soundcard has cured the problem with the soundcard coming out of hibernation with no sound. I no longer have to unplug the jack and plug it back in to get sound. There must be a little glitch in the Realtek R2.70 drivers.

The downfall to this... no Realtek sound interface/gui, and no "stereo mix" recording source, so there is no way to record sound playing on your computer such as recording Youtube videos with Audacity. Bummer!

Bug Report submitted to Realtek.

Hi Tee,

This probably is a silly question, but how do I get Windows 8 to restore the original stock driver ?

Cheers,
