Solved Problems with Sound

Okay, starting from the more recent beginning, I decided to upgrade my computer. I installed a new gpu and cpu successfully, but failed to correctly install the power supply. While trying to start the power supply, it shorted and fried my hard drive. After a few painful weeks with best buy, they replaced the power supply, and replaced the hard drive. Having (to my horror) losing my windows 7 disk and retail stores everywhere rid of their copies, I reluctantly decided to get windows 8. Fast forward to a while later, and I have some troubles with my monitor (which is fairly old, but a very good monitor) and connect my computer to a tv via HDMI. The HDMI provides sound through the TV, so I don't have any problems really. My monitor ends up being fine, so I (yesterday) connected my PC and monitor again via DVI cord. Everything is fine visually, but when I hop into skype to talk to a few friends that I game with from time to time, I notice that there is no sound. I checked my devices, and the only one there is "Digital Audio (HDMI) High Definition Audio Device," which I assumed only works with HDMI connections, which my monitor doesn't have.

The microphone worked fine still, so I was puzzled. I first tried the back ports for the headphones instead of the front, that didn't work. I unplugged the headset and put it into a nearby laptop to check if the headset was still working. I got sound out of the laptop. I tried another pair of headphones and got the same result.

I thought the problem might be with my drivers. After desperately trying to get the computer to recognize audio devices, I tried downloading a few drivers and restarting. I download 3 or 4 drivers, all not helping the problem. Nvidia drivers, realtek drivers, nothing worked. I really am in a pickle here, and I'd hate to have to go back to best buy and get robbed for them to install some software.

Any ideas? The headset worked fine before all of the changes to my computer/my hard drive frying. I'd appreciate any help I can get, this is driving me crazy.

The first thing I see is that you don't have the proper sound driver installed. The HD Audio Device suggests its just the basic function generic Windows installed sound driver. In most cases the PC or motherboard vendor's sound driver is preferred and works best. As you have an ASUS motherboard, check with ASUS for a sound driver.

Second, if you still have the HDMI cable connected to the PC, the PC will default to the HDMI for audio rather than the "Speakers" (sound card).

Well, I sure feel silly. That seemed to solve most of my problems, although VIA audio was being a little nasty towards windows 8, but compatibility fixed it. Thank you for your help, good sir.
