Solved Cannot install "Minesweeper"

Hi,

I can't install the (Microsoft) Minesweeper-App from the store. My initial try to install the app was interrupted, and since then, every install hangs for quite some time ("Pending"), then ends with "This app is no longer available." or "This app wasn't installed."

I already tried deleting all caches and pieces from the failed first install attempt I could find, but that didn't help. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Felix Freiberger

I'd really like to avoid that - I've installed a lot of applications after that.

OK, I wish I had another idea. I've had a couple of apps just quit working and I tried numerous things to fix them, including reinstalling the app and nothing worked. I even tried the Windows 8 Refresh and that didn't help. It was only after reinstalling Windows (done for other reasons) that they started working again. I have no idea if its the app or Windows 8, or a combination of the two that causes the glitches but broken apps have been a pain to fix for me.

So, Windows-Store-Apps can get into an invalid state, which prevents them from working even after reinstalling them. Where could these traces be? I already found these (which didn't help in my case):

  • AppData\Local\Packages
  • AppData\Local\Packages\WinStore_cw5n1h2txyewy\AC\Microsoft\Windows Store\Cache
  • AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Store\Checkpoints
  • AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Store\Cache Medium IL

I wish I knew because at some point another one of my apps will likely fail. For me, when I launch them they go full screen for a couple of seconds but then disappear without fully launching. They show up as a tile on the left like they are running but they aren't. Slacker radio was the first one to do it to me. The Weather app did it too, its live tile worked but you couldn't open it full screen. I really hate programs like that. If you uninstall something, it should uninstall and not leave stuff behind. I wouldn't be surprised that even though they are free apps, there is some DRM bullshit hidden on your system somewhere.

Have you tried to install another app, something you haven't installed before? That may tell you if its Windows that's messed up or the other app that's messed up. Although it didn't work for me, you could have a look at the custom F8 boot up options like the Windows 8 system Refresh. if I remember correctly Restore will wipe out your installed programs but Refresh won't. Its equivalent to the old sfc/scannow command.

Other apps install fine for me. Minesweeper installs fine for others. There really is something messed-up about that partial install.
I'm quite certain that Refresh won't fix it (since it keeps all Metro apps), and Restore isn't a viable solution.

So, any more ideas?

Yeah, refresh didn't work for me but I thought I'd mention it anyway. I don't have any other ideas at the moment. I was already thinking about reinstalling Windows 8 so I didn't spend a lot of time trying to figure out why my apps didn't work. There are a couple of other threads about app problems, looking though those might help.

Finally, the installation worked. I have no idea why, but it fixed itself.

This is interesting. Just looked into this because all games, weather etc worked fine until I upgraded to 8.1. So the upgrade has created this same effect. Installed a new game to check if this affected a new install... Yes the same. Loads launch screen for a short period before switching back to start screen. Icon still shows in LH slide out.
