7-ZIP and administrator rights problem.

  1. I've got a strange problem running 7-Zip 9.28 alpha [64 bit] under Windows 8 Pro x64 RTM. Hope you can help.

In order to be able to click on a zip file and then extract it's contents to a folder I have to set 7zFM.exe to run with Administrator rights via Properties | Compatibility. However, when I do this the 7-Zip 'Open Archive' context menu does not work.

When I remove Admin rights from 7zFM.exe the 'Open Archive' context menu works but I can no longer click on a zip and extract it's contents. I get multiple messages for various files like this one: 0 ERROR: Can not delete output file <file path is here> .
Interestingly, I get these same exact messages if I try to extract to a folder that is open by a running program.
  2. Keep in mind I can't use the 'Run as Administrator' context menu option because I am clicking on the zip file not running the 7-Zip GUI directly. My only option is to use compatibility mode to set Admin rights. I've had many programs that require Admin rights under Windows 8 then I ever had with Windows 7. Any thoughts/ideas on my problems?

Windows 8 is driving me nuts. I got 7-Zip to work fine when I gave my user account full control over the folder I am extracting to. Why did I have to do this to get it to work? I never had to do this in Windows 7. I've run into all sorts of Administrator rights problems with W8.

For example, the Registry Scanner from NirSoft. If you try the to Open the Registry on a key RS is displaying nothing happens. Either you have to run RS as Administrator or set RS to have Admin rights in compatibly mode. Once again I never had to do this in W7.

Is it just me that is having these sort of Admin issues?

What folder are you attempting to extract to? If it's at the root of a drive, or one of the protected folders (\Program Files, ProgramData, \Windows), then yes, you need admin access to do this. If it's a profile folder (like your desktop or documents), that wouldn't make sense unless 7zip is doing something "bad" when launching (for what it's worth, I've been using WinRAR without problems on Win8, but I've not tried 7zip yet).

It's my Firefox folder in \Program Files (x86). Nothing special about it. As I stated, the error messages I were getting were exactly the same as when I try to extract to the Fx folder when Fx is running.

FYI
I run Fx hourlies. I download the latest one, open it in 7-Zip via the Fx download menu, exit from Firefox, then extract it to my Firefox folder. This always worked in Windows 7 without having to give full control to my Fx folder.

Perhaps the reason the folder did not have full control for my user account was the fact that I manually created the folder the first time because I use the ZIP version of the hourlies. Maybe if I ran the EXE version it would have created the folder with full control for me.

Perhaps - in Windows 8 (and technically, it was the same in Windows 7 too, unless it was changed by the installer or manually by the user), \Program Files folders are "protected". By default, they're read only except for administrators running with a full admin token (aka, elevated process run as administrator) and the SYSTEM account. You can use icacls to change this, if you need to, and once you do the problem will go away.

I had to reinstall W8 Pro x64 due to problems I had running Modern Apps like the Solitaire Suite from MS. After installing 7-Zip, the latest x64 alpha version, I can't seem to get the context menus to work. Some options do nothing while others give me this error message :

---------------------------
7-Zip
---------------------------
The requested operation requires elevation.

C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7zG.exe
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

I gave all three of the exe's in the 7-Zip folder Admin rights and also took ownership of the folder. This same version of 7-Zip was working on my previous W8 install, btw.

Any ideas on getting the context menus to work? Within the 7-Zip GUI I can do what all the context menu options do because the exe has Admin rights. Do I need to give the context menu programs Admin rights too? I haven't found a way to do this.

Never encountered this before. Using the beta.
Maybe the latest alpha's have some bugs related to Win8?

I'm using the x64 7-zip 9.22 (not the alpha) and all works well on Win8.
The e-mail shell commands seem to be better in latest version but I don't use those.

If you try extract to Program Files directly, then you can expect some problems.
Always extract to your user folder or desktop and then move files to Program Files.

Try to run 7zFM.exe as Admin and then Tools -> Options for resigning the context menu's.
This should have worked, but as I see, you allready run it as admin. Oops.

I had 9.3 alpha working on my previous W8. I've always had trouble with 7-Zip, it never worked out of the box. I have to give the executables Admin rights to work in all cases. I don't recall if I had to do something similar with the context menu items under my previous W8. All I know is that they worked.

Based on the error message I need to elevate something in 7-Zip but I don't know what at this point.

Maybe I can reproduce that error on 9.22.

It says that 7z alpha is not recommended for normal usage.
It messed up some of my archives in the past (corrupted the files) so I believe that now.

Weird error there because I didn't saw it yet on Win8.
I'll wait with the 9.3 until it stabilizes a bit more.

Maybe try uninstalling and remove all registry entries or 7-Zip then try reinstalling. You can of course try different versions as well.

Good luck

As I stated in my first couple of posts made when I installed W8 the first time I had problems extracting a firefox zip build to the firefox folder in program files(x86). I eventually discovered that I had to give Admin rights to 7zFM.exe. I had to do the same thing this time around for my W8 install. For good measure I gave the other two executables Admin rights also.

That's about all I did. I just can't get the 7-Zip context menu in Explorer to do any options on the menu. Either nothing happens or I get the 'elevated' message.

Have you tried the 9.22 yet?

Or you probably want the speed improvements for Ivy Bridge in the latest alpha.

This is 7-zip 9.22 on Win8 RTM x64:
7zip.png
-The Windows theme is from RP version, I said it just to avoid confusion.
-The 7zip theme is my own, for the rest, original 9.22 version.
-I ran 7z as admin just to assign it to its format (see icon left)
-The shell commands in the right click menu work, I just removed the e-mail links with in the options just to prove it works, and I don't need those.

So I think it has to be new code in the alpha that still needs some testing. I'm not gonna use it until it becomes more stable.
Win8 is also on Ivy Bridge here and for the moment 7z has been stable.

I tried v9.20 and it does the same thing. Also as I said, I had v9.30 alpha working on my old install of W8 Pro x64 so it's not a problem with the alpha version in my case.

I tried a couple of other similar products and they all worked fine. None of them required me to do anything regarding security rights. Why the heck do I have to it with 7-Zip? Never had this problem with W7 btw.

Yep. Went through <exactly> the same steps trying to find an answer, found none. And years later, we're still here in 2012.

Through trial and error, here's how I fixed it in order:
  1. Uninstall (using uninstaller in the 7z folder) -> Restart PC -> Re-install
  2. Run this program as administrator for 7z.exe, 7zFM.exe, 7zG.exe
  3. Ran CCleaner, analyzed & cleaned 7z
  4. Disabled Run this program as administrator for 7z.exe BUT the privilege remained active -> error gone, able to use the program normally

I hope that helps.

If anyone knows what actually happened, do inform. I'm interested.
