Hi there
Skype seems to have fixed their mobile application (Android > 2.3) -- Calling with video now works properly -- quality of the video is improved.

No problem on Windows 8 Enterprise -- even activated the webcam OK -- and I couldn't find a driver for it manually.

Anybody who is on the net and still making traditional calls should consider this type of service -- There may be other providers if you don't want to use Skype.

For example 30 min call from smart phone Brussels Belgium to Iceland standard landline (not Skype at receiving end) ===> 18 EUR (traditional method at Sunday rates with "frequent number" discounts)

Skype same call from mobile via Wifi ====> 0.08 EUR !!!!!!! big big difference.

It's a no brainer -- the money you save can get you the SSD you want quickly.

(If you don't like Skype --there are other equivalents I'm sure --worth while using these methods whoever the provider is).

There's no Metro app yet for this -- you'll have to use the desktop at the moment if running from a PC.

Cheers
jimbo

Did they pay you to say that?

Hi there
what's the problem -- was only pointing out that a previous version which wasn't working properly had been fixed and is a lot cheaper way of making calls than the standard. - If you actually read through the post I did say if you didn't like Skype then there are probably other suppliers -- and I was trying to SAVE people money by suggesting that instead of using standard Network providers such as Vodaphone, O2 etc they use their WiFi systems instead using a VOIP (Voice over IP) system whenever possible.

Not sure what your problem here is with this - obviously you seem not to like suggestions of how to save money -- I'm NOT trying to sell any product -- I specifically said if you don't like the supplier I am using try an alternative. It was the METHOD I'm suggesting not any particular supplier.

Cheers

Good Reply there Jimbo45, I can understand why some do question when someone raves about some product. That is the main reason I almost always say whether I have a financial interest in the product/service.

Better to be clearly understood from the get go.

I did not see anything in your topic that suggested you were selling Skype...

VoipGain has very cheap call rates.

VoipGain | cheapest calling rates

Thanks for the info -- looks good too.

My point basically was to say it's ALWAYS worthwhile to investigate these type of services rather than swell the already over full coffers of Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile, Belgacom etc with even more money when an alternative system is zillions of percent cheaper.

I wasn't actually pushing SKYPE - but merely saying if you can use VOIP rather than the bog standard "Mobile Roaming" connection whenever you are on a WiFi network then go for it as it's HUGELY cheaper. Choose your own provider here.

Actually in the UK there are reports of Vodafone attempting to block the use of VOIP systems from its phones -- however in Iceland and in most other countries in the EU locking phones to a particular network is ILLEGAL so you should never have a problem using this type of service - whoever you have a contract with.

I believe the UK and USA are the only two countries in the world who still can lock phones to particular networks legally -- but even in these 2 countries it still only costs about 14 EUR to get the device "Unlocked" if you don't want to do it yourself.

(Nothing else changes if you unlock your phone -- your Vodafone stuff etc is quite unchanged - but you'll find you can delete all the "Tied Network stuff" and you can use another simcard - say while you are away from home in another country - a Pay as you Go card at often much cheaper rates than your home operator -- and of course SKYPE / whatever etc becomes available too).
