Metro Apps not working

Hello All,
I am having somewhat of an odd issue. When I launch a Metro app, it will show the 'app start screen' but then immediately close. It would appear that the process is still running because I can see it, and others attempted, in the running Metro apps area (top left, mouse down). I recently completely disabled UAC but then re-enabled it to get them to work. I now know that it is not a UAC issue because I have seen the error about it not being enabled. I do believe however, that disabling may have started this issue.

Any tips?

Thanks in advance!

Hello InfectionZer0,

What release (DP, CP, or RTM) of Windows 8 are you using?

The issue with UAC having to be turned on to the default level for Metro apps to run has been fixed in the RTM release though. :)

I am currently running Windows 8 Pro x64 (Final). Let me try restoring UAC to default and see. Will post back

Edit: UAC Defaults did not resolve.
Metro App troubleshooter did not find anything
Avast reinstalled, uninstalled, ccleaner ran (another thread)
Switching to Local profile (another site)
Updating Graphics driver (another site)

Still closes immediately.

Did you by chance do anything that would affect this registry key in bold below to disable UAC?

This was used in Windows 7 to disable UAC, but in Windows 8, that key needs to stay set as 1. If set to 0, it will cause issues with Metro apps like you are having. Anything designed for Windows 7 for this will not work properly in Windows 8 because of this.

Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"ConsentPromptBehaviorAdmin"=dword:00000000
[SIZE=3][B]"EnableLUA"=dword:0000000[COLOR=#ff0000]0[/COLOR][/B][/SIZE]
"PromptOnSecureDesktop"=dword:00000000

I had disabled that originally, but switched it back when I first read about UAC causing Metro issues.

Are the apps working again for you now with that changed, and restarted the computer?

Sorry, no. I meant to say in my post that I had flipped the registry value earlier than when I posted the thread as I received the error about it needing to be turned on. When I went through an defaulted UAC, I went back through secpol and changed all those to default and put the popup level back to default as well. This is still an issue.

If you like, you could do a refresh of Windows 8 without losing as much as reseting or resintalling.

Did you do an upgrade or clean install of W8 RTM? I did an upgrade from W7 originally but had so many annoying problems I went with a clean install and all my problems disappeared. This might work for you if all else fails.

Have a look at the windows Firewall. Avast would have disabled it, and maybe not turned it back on with the uninstall. It must be enabled to use most of the Metro Apps..

    Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.

I'll try that next.

I did upgrade. I just got an SSD installed and got everything configured when I found that I had a Win 8 license through the MS Academic program. So I didn't want to reconfigure absolutely everything custom I had, but in hindsight, that would have been the better option. Maybe after I decide to completely transition, I'll wipe it clean and start anew.

Have a look at the windows Firewall. Avast would have disabled it, and maybe not turned it back on with the uninstall. It must be enabled to use most of the Metro Apps..

In my readings, I saw that point as well. I checked the firewall and it was all enabled. I checked the white/black listed items and I have no blocked items.

Thanks for the replies all, we'll see what a refresh does.
