Will we be required to get a developer license?

I noticed that to write a Metro-style app in Microsoft's development kit I have to get a developer license. It was free, but when it expired after 1 month, the apps I had written were disabled -- even on my own computer. That seems a little disturbing to me. With this arrangement, Microsoft has the power to disable anything I develop retroactively. Is that true? If so, should I be worried? Is there another development platform for Metro apps that doesn't require a developer license from Microsoft?

After reading your post, I opened Visual Studio, and it prompted me to renew my license in a popup window. I am now renewed, for another month, up through 9/3/2012. Once Windows 8 is officially released, you'll be able to get a license for $49/yr.

That said, I don't know why you're not prompted to renew. Did you opening Visual Studio? Let me know...

Edit: Open Visual Studio (Express for Win 8 in my case). If you're not prompted to renew, open the Store menu at the top and try one of the submenus.

Skallal, Thanks for the info. Yes, it did prompt me to renew the license when I opened Blend and I was able to get that. But my concern was that the compiled app itself was disabled when the developer licence expired. Not only can I no longer write new apps, but presumably all the apps I have written in the past will be disabled if I do not maintain a license. I am more interested in developing for myself and my team, not for distributing outside my company, so I don't want to pay for a license if I don't need to.
