Cause of .NET Framework needed popup?

I'm running Windows 8.1.

Occasionally, I get a popup:

"Windows Features
An app on your PC needs the following Windows feature:
.NET Framework 3.5 (includes Net 2.0 and 3.0)
Download and install...
Skip this installation"

Does anyone know of a way to determine what 'app' needs this feature?

I have been clicking 'Skip this installation' up to now, and I have not noticed any ill effects.

Thanks for any hints.

can you take a screenshot of it when it happens?

windows+PrtSc

You'll probably have to put a list up what you have installed in the Add/remove or Programs folder like so..:

addremove.PNG
or even just a camera phone picture?

then go here..

this is really annoying but this person had the same problem.. but then didn't seem to post the answer!! .. but interesting right..

.NET Framework 3.5 will not install on my Win 8.1 machine - Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs

I am kinda thinking it's virus related.. because if you don't even know what program wants to use it.. and all your programs work without it.. that's not a good sign...
Thanks, although to clarify: in my case I am not trying to install NET framwork, so unlike the OP you referenced, I'm not getting install failures.

still, NOTHING should pop up at you telling you to install anything except windows update sometimes does annoying things like that..

there are other programs that after you install them pop up messages..

things like Anti-virus software pop ups messages..

but out of the blue "net frame-work" ?

It's time to run all the virus scans.

Eset
Hitman Pro
Malwarebytes
Windows Defender.. -

I'm sure I'm forgetting a ton of other free ones..

Edit- found this guy who posted up a good way to check your computer.. most of the programs still apply and you can try going through these.. they will pretty much ensure you're cleared up..

also here is my windows programs and features.. notice I don't even have Framework checked.. and I don't get popups at all..

Napkins333, thanks for the additional suggestions.

I read through the 'Laptop freezes when browsing' discussion, then ran Eset, which reported no problems.

I have been running AVG Anti-Virus scans and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scans, and they also report no problems.

Thanks for the screen shot of your Windows Features settings. I checked mine just now, and I also have had .Net Framework unselected.

Next time the I get the popup, I'll post a screen shot here.

yeah.. I never have seen any pop in my life about installing framework...

but I don't know what programs you have installed also... but it's still unusual..

the only pop-up's I get are "your virus protection is out of date"... and I always tell my computer to "shut up" out loud in the room when nobody is around.. I start talking to my computer.. ha.

ha.. ok but you still need to know what program is initiating that pop up.. and there are plenty of "false" pop-ups and they would be especially for something like framework or actually even virus signatures..

the point is.. I don't know how deep into scary territory you've been on the Internet, but if you are safe Internet surfer and haven't clicked anything on random websites, then you can assume it's legit..

however if you are downloading torrents/ watching illegal movies/ visiting those nightly night sites... then...
haha.
