Anyone know what is going on with ToolWiz Time Freeze? Supposedly they released a new version yesterday. Softpedia now says it is Shareware when it was Freeware in the past. The changelog is for the 2015 release.

The toolwiz.com site has be redone and it seems botched. Hitting the Download Button on their site gives a 404 error.

I am just curious because this was freeware for a long time. But searching gives no info at all what the paid version(if there is one) has that the free one does not.

ToolWiz Time Freeze freeware ethics abandoned

It looks as though ToolWiz have totally sold out to commerce, and abandoned their "Always Freeware for Everyone" ethics..

Here's their front page from a couple of months ago... courtesy of WayBackMachine Welcome To ToolWiz

..and now..

along with their 'pledge' on the 'about us' page

compared to now

...anything referencing Freeware has been removed... and all products are no longer Freeware for Commercial Use either.

so make sure you keep older ToolWiz versions, and copies of their archived webpages to prove it was "Always Freeware for Everyone" when you got it.... because they just rewrote their history, and their dedication to Commerce appears to be their highest priority...

Yeah, web archives can be embarrassing. Someone wanted to find the last free version of the Clip.to utility. I looked through a bunch of dates in the web archive. Came upon the section of the FAQ that said the program is and will always be freeware. Well, no matter how far back in the archive you get the download, when installed and run it puts up a MsgBox the gist of which is "thanks for your interest in the beta but that is over now." And it asks if you want to go to the site and get the latest paid version.

I haven't figured out how they did it unless the free versions always "called home" on start up.

The icing on the cake is they are still selling that paid version although it hasn't been updated in over a year. It seems nobody wants to give away an AutoCopy or paste type utility unless it is strictly a browser AddOn.

Edit: On Time Freeze I used the "contact us" to ask if they would clear up the confusion about ToolWiz Time Freeze. I haven't gotten a response yet. But it probably went to the people who implemented the web page rather than the Time Freeze developers.
