Lame Search function in Win8

When I bought my latest new laptop I reluctantly became a Windows 8 user. I miss the utility I enjoyed in the XP Search function. The results of the XP (and earlier) Search showed pathnames for the files it found and showed them in a simple columnar list form. If uninterested in Size or File type, I could kill those columns to make room for longer pathnames. Win8 results take up many screens with icons in some searches and will allow simple viewing of contents or will bring up the saved file for changes if desired. I have not found any way to learn where I saved a particular file, and when I examine the contents and close the target, this lame :(application compels me to completely restart the search. Am I missing something or is there an alternate and more useful Search function somewhere? Thanks in advance.
