Uninstall problem

Hi everyone. First time on the forum and looking for help with a frustrating problem.

I am trying to catalogue a dvd collection so looked around for a programme to help me. I did some site searches and finally chose a free programme called Album Tracker from Duck Software. After trying it out I found it didn't match what I actually wanted so tried to uninstall it.

It just won't uninstall. I've tried Windows uninstall, the programmes own uninstall option and even uninstall on CC cleaner. Each attempt gets the same result. A circle showing it's trying to complete the task and this just continues no matter how long I wait.

I've tried re-start and shut down, then manual re-start and still it won't uninstall. Any other options I can use to rid my laptop of this little devil, please?

P.S - Just noticed the last time the programme was updated was, probably, 2011 and the controlling company Technology Solutions Inc have a non working contact page...brilliant....

Try the Revo Uninstaller Freeware from here If System Restore works on your Laptop(never did work right on my Toshiba) then make a Restore Point before you start. After uninstall or deleting as many files as possible, use Wise Registry Cleaner Free Portable to get rid of all the Registry references.

If the system won't let you delete files in the application install folder try Unlocker

MilesAhead. Thanks for the reply.

I've tried Revo but it just hung, so left it overnight and was just the same when I came back to it this morning. Then tried Unlocker but it gave a "no handle found" report and didn't remove the programme after a reboot.

I'll just have to leave the programme sitting in the background as I've checked if it's active and always shows 0% so doesn't seem to be harming my pc in any way.

Mclaughlinc - never done a restore before and not going to do one over a little programme like this one. Also, as nothing seems to be happening, in the background, I'm just going to leave it alone and tackle it a.n other day

Thanks for the quick response anyway. Much appreciated. :thumb:

Are you saying the program is running in the background and is still running after a reboot? If so it must be set to start with Windows somehow. Have you looked in Task Manager's Startup Tab? You may be able to get it to stop running at startup using that.

Otherwise it sounds like malware. It may be preventing anything from killing it. But try Task Manager Startup Tab first. Also what happens when you try to kill it via Task Manager?

Album Tracker shows up in Program Files (x86) but it isn't visible in Task Manager so not actually working, or running in the background. (Does that make sense)

So, I'm assuming (and I know you shouldn't) that this is just stuck here as a "dead" un-working program?

Ok, I thought maybe it could not be deleted because it was running or something like that. Have you tried running Revo or other uninstallers As Administrator? I don't think I have run into something like this where the files won't be deleted unless it is a system file like index.dat as example.

Pretty strange. I guess you could try booting a WinPE(such as system recovery disk that gives a command prompt) or other OS that supports writing to NTFS, from a USB stick, and just delete the program folder that way. Is your system partition NTFS simple volume? You don't have RAID or dynamic volumes or something else unusual?

Whoa, Miles...lost me at "ok" :what:

A lot of what you've suggested is way outside my experience on pc's. I'm a regular user but not that teckie. How would I run Revo as Administrator and if I was able to is there a process I have to follow. (I'm not afraid to have a go as long as I have a little background knowledge to work with :geek:)

Certainly your last paragraph went straight over my head and caught the next bus away from my brain.....but if you can give me a few clues on how to do some of these tasks I'll don my lab coat and burn the midnight oil

To run a program As Administrator just right click the shortcut to it and click "Run As Administrator" from the context menu.

The other stuff about booting from a USB Stick you can read about if the Revo option does not work, here: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/5132-recovery-drive-create-usb-flash-drive-windows-8-a.html

Something in Windows seems to block deleting the folder of the program. When that happens the way around it is to boot a different OS. Many of those "emergency CD" kits use Linux OS with a bunch of utilities already set up to work right from the boot.

But try the Revo As Admin first and see if you get lucky. :)

Hi gang. Sorry for the delay replying but I have a condition called "work" that prevented me from replying earlier. I've been to the docs and her assures me a couple of days rest should solve the condition :D

Right since your last post I went into the program, as administrator, unchecked the read only option, tried an uninstall, again and when I went back the folder was still there BUT all the program attributes have been deleted leaving just the uninstall option inside. So, looks like your suggestions worked, with the exception of the uninstall item, so I'm not that bothered about that.

Many thanks MilesAhead. Your suggestions have done the trick and I'm as happy as a pig in muck (kept it clean there  )

If I have any further problems I'll drop by and chew the fat a while

Take care, guys

Glad you got it worked out. :)

Edit: No pun intended, except subconsciously. :)
