Solved Bitmap Images vs. File Icons

Using an App called Lyricist for making music score sheets showing guitar chord diagrams and song lyrics. This problem occurred with Vista and Windows 7, involving the insertion of bitmap images when creating new songs. Instead of displaying the chord's BMP image, a file icon is created at the insertion point. However, previously created songs display properly.

Here is the Lyricist technical support solution that worked with previous versions of MS Windows.

Error message during Chord insertion:

Some users have received an error message when
attempting to insert Chords. Others have been able to insert Chords, but
they appear as "thumbnails" (a reduced version of the bitmap with the
name of the .bmp file displayed beneath it). We have found that both of
these issues are related to a Microsoft browser bug and can be reproduced in MS
Wordpad. The good news is that they are commonly resolved with a minor registry
tweak. We have created a file that will perform this tweak easily and
safely.

This suggestion and their tweak file do not correct the problem in Windows 8. The App company is not planning to offer a Windows 8 upgrade any time soon.

Anyone else having problems with BMP files? Any suggestions on how to solve this issue?

I see.
It seems this program worked well in Win98 or XP right?

There are some fixes you can try.
You can try compatibility mode like here:
compatibility.png
Win8 has good Win98 compatibility.
If it's not working => try XP sp3.

If there are still issues left (not working that well) you can use a virtual machine of the right OS for this program under VMware Player or VirtualBox.

Good Luck

This App is installed by selecting compatibility mode and runs under Administrator per the manufacturer's installation instructions. Here is a link to their website www.virtualstudiosystems.com/lyricist.php

That applies only to the installer but you also need to setup compatibility to the app launcher/main executable that is installed. Look in the path of it's shortcut to where it's installed and then set compatibility for it or its shortcut.

Thanks that did the trick. This software App ran correctly in Windows 7. When I first ran the compatibility test, it selected the "Windows XP (Service Pack 3)" setting. After reading your post, I change the setting to "Windows 7." The App is working correctly now. Thank you very much!!!
