Ccleaner

Hello
I need some advice with Ccleaner.
I am not sure about the settings where it says wipes drive space, monitoring and when to backup the registry.
I would not want to run the registry cleaner but would consider the Windows and application cleaners. So, should I perform a system restore before any cleaning or just do a registry back up?
Thank you
P.S. the Windows app shows it can clean about 2GB with all the boxes checked except regedit.

Backing up is something you should always do regularly, doens't matter for what reason.

Ccleaner keeps an eye on browsers and trash on your system, this because your system and browsers are writing files for logging(system) and saving cache to load the pages the next time faster and other stuff. To keep the free space you can set Ccleaner to warn you whenever the space that can be saved is more then the minimum. Ccleaner can also warn you whenever you close your browsers.

Where exactly did you find "wipes drive space"? I can only find wipes free drive space. Most likely "wipes drive space" will 'reset' your free space. Whenever you delete a file it is only marked as deleted but not actually deleted. Ofcourse you get the space back in explorer, but with wipes drive space Ccleaner removes the as deleted marked files permanently, so a program like recuva (from the same company) can't find any deleted files anymore.

You are right, it is free space being wiped. I disabled monitoring and startup.
Some of these programs can be dangerous if in the wrong hands.
You know years ago I used to use Revo and Ccleaner conservatively and ultimately would drop a file. Since I discontinued any type of cleaner, I have had no issues like that. I think it may be better to have a few orphans and remnants than a dropped file especially if it is necessary to proper operation. Cleaners should be in the hands of those who are registry savvy and know what they are doing. I downloaded Ccleaner b/c I had not seen it for years but it seems more lethal than ever with monitoring etc. I leave it to experienced people not average level folks like me..
I have not experienced any blue screen of death. Thank you for tasking the time.

If you run the disk cleanup feature, clean the cache of the browsers and, using windows logo + r to search for these folders, delete everything in the %temp% and the temp folder once in a while you're pretty much doing the same as Ccleaner.

I do run %temp%, disc cleanup and clean up the browsers.
I guess that does it fairly well and thank you.

I won't presume to tell anybody else what to do with their computer, but I've used CCleaner without incident for years. I've also installed CCEnhancer, which makes CCleaner find even more junk. After just a week or so of doing nothing but surfing the web, it usually finds a GB or more of useless stuff. Does removing it make my laptop run better? Can't say, but if nothing else it makes me feel better. I never use the registry cleaner.

When you run the Windows tab, and I am only assuming you do, do you use the defaults or do you alter the check boxes?
If you perform a system restore if there is a problem, will it fix the problem Ccleaner has done? It is a registry backup and more so I would think it would.

Without CCEnhancer Ccleaner finds here 5GB of cache data after a week and I'm only surfing on the web ;)
There are lots of factors that are coming to you when you talk about making your laptop run better.

I have indeed altered what is checked by default. There are only a few not checked. If you check to remove something that would cause you to lose something (like saved settings or passwords), you'll get a warning message. As for a system restore, I can't say as I've never had to do one in the 20+ years I've messed with computers.

If most of your settings are checked except for the obvious like passwords, I can assume you are convinced the Windows tab is safe to use.
Also, I thought the warning came up only with the registry to back up the registry. You are saying you get a warning using the Windows tab too.?
Help me out with some tabs you would recommended unchecking as the check is too long.
Lastly are you proficient enough to know what you are deleting when you run Ccleaner or are you relying upon the program to know.

Most users are relying upon the program in the hope the program is doing what it is saying that it does.
Same for me.
