DISM- what is this image you speak of?

I went online to find a command (for a Windows config batch file I'm putting together) that will "turn off a windows feature", namely Internet Explorer 11. I guess I don't understand the paradigm, the command doesn't seem to work. If someone could point me in the right direction or explain briefly what the difference is between a "windows feature" and a plain old application, that would be great!
    Thanks in advance.

Why not simply remove IE ?

Can't help with the batch file.

    Windows 3.1 > Windows 10

the command line to use > for the current online windows x64 system
    Dism /online /Disable-Feature /FeatureName:Internet-Explorer-Optional-amd64 /Remove

if you just want to disable the feature, and not remove it's payload
    Dism /online /Disable-Feature /FeatureName:Internet-Explorer-Optional-amd64

This thread is inspired by a discussion we had recently over on SF. Do you speak a language other than English? I can speak a little bit of French (which is more than enough to survive on when in France) and I'm currently learning ancient Greek and Latin... but they don't really count ;). ...
