Portable programs software

I'm thinking of downloading some portable versions of some programs I use and keeping them on a spare usb stick.

Can I just save these portable programs on the usb stick or is there a program that can run these portable programs that I need to install on the usb stick?

Anything else worth knowing about?

Portable means no installation necessary. But some create .INI files to remember settings on the PC, but you can run them from USB device, just plug the USB in and if you wish during download direct it strait to the USB instead of downloads.

As a point of interest you can also put software installers(.msi & .exe) on an USB and use it to install the software on different computers. I do this for my Desktop and laptop specially while I'm testing windows 10 and have to reinstall the software after each OS clean install.

PortableApps.com provides a nice interface for portable apps.
Apps packages created by them also support an autoupdate.

Portableapps.com - Do I download this onto my usb stick?

Install it onto USB and it will create Windows 7 Start menu with all your apps and such.
You will see, how much free space is left and with one click, it will initiate: safely remove.
