Solved Resizeable app windows

Crashed

I've reinstalled Windows 8.1 after trying out 10 T.P. for a while. According to Windows update I have all updates availabe for my computer, but now I can't resize any metro apps. Does anybody know specifically what update for 8.1 enables the resizeable app windows, or if there is some sort of registry hack that will enable it. TIA for any help.

I found a fix, sort of. I installed a program called Modern Mix from Stardock that enables the sizeable windows feature, (for Windows prior to 8.1 I'm assuming). After I installed it, the Windows features enabled themselves. I uninstalled it, and the resizable app windows are still working. Go figure. Guess I just had to show this box who was boss, by way of a third party app. Anyway, I will mark this as solved, and suggest anybody with a similar issue, to try it. Worked for me.:thumb:

I think natively Windows 8 hasn't got resizable app Windows. It can only run apps in full screen mode. Or am I wrong?

You may be some what correct. I am at work right now so I can't post a big expanation, but it seems my troubles are not quite as solved as I had hoped. Will elaborate more after work. In the meantime I shall mark this as unsolved again.:(

Ok, originally, my computer had Windows 8 when I bought it. I bought it when Windows 8 itself, was only a few months old. I updated to 8.1 through the Windows store app, not very long after it was released. That is when the metro apps became resizable, along with the new start button, killed the charms bar, and a bunch of other things that I can't seem to remember right this moment. Then Windows 10 came along, so I thought I would try it. Got up to build 10056, and things started getting a little buggy. At that point I decided to go back to Windows 8. I had read some where, (probably this forum), that I could download an 8.1 iso file directly from Microsoft, and that my bios embed product key would be good. I figured it would save a bit of time updating, if I started out at 8.1, (I have tremendously slow internet), so I made a disc, wiped the drive, installed 8.1, and updated till there was no more.

So now I'm here wondering why some stuff is different. My theory, is that 8 updated to 8.1, is not the same as 8.1 full install. I have acquired an 8 iso and will try installing it, and updating to 8.1 to see if this is the case. I also have the discs I burned with the original factory install, that I made when the computer was brand new, but hopefully I won't have to go that route, as it will install all the bloatware that came on it. I thought the Modern Mix program had fixed the resize thing, just by installing it. The resize looks exactly the same as I remember,

so I thought maybe just installing Modern Mix had some how sorted it out. I uninstalled it but after reboot it goes back to it's regular full screen self, so it didn't do anything, except what it was supposed to do, I guess. Anyway, seems my options are stick with a third party app, (which is going to want some money after thirty days), or try to install 8 and update it.

To resize(width only) use aero(windows key & left or right arrows. When an app is open after you place it left or right then mouse up to show taskbar and click what ever open window you want. When you close the app just drag the desktop panel fully to the side. To open 2 or more apps you have to play around until you get the hang of it.
Is this what you wanted? I'm not sure if I understood correctly.

Is this what you wanted? I'm not sure if I understood correctly.

No, it's not. And it seems the more I read about it, the more confused I get too. Or maybe I should say "don't read" as it seems no one else got such an update and there is no info about it anywhere. When I upgraded to 8.1 through the windows store app, the option to resize it, just like in my picture above, worked just like you see it after the update. No third party app needed. I didn't even know that third party apps existed to do that, till a couple of days ago. I knew about the start menu apps, even tried a couple, (Classic Shell & StartIsBack), but didn't really care for them and uninstalled them long before I did the 8.1 update. In fact I just called my brother, who updated his laptop to 8.1, around the same time I did my computer, and he said his only had the half screen/full screen option as well.

It's seems like I'm the only one who received that update. I know I didn't just imagine this, as I thought it was one of the best features of the update and used it often. I use the mail app, and play three games from the store app allot, (Microsoft Solitaire, Mah-jong, and Jigsaw), and I always had them shrunk down like a regular window. So when I reinstalled 8.1, I just expected the resize would work like it did before, but I guess I'm the only one that ever had it.

The whole thing is just wierd. I think I hear Windows 10 calling me back. :dinesh:

Yeah I'll be upgrading my desktop a few months after RTM comes out, and my laptop as soon as it comes out(I'm using build 10056 on it now but keep my Win7 drive updated). I like how you can resize to "gadget" size.

Once more, natively Windows 8 does not steplessly resize Apps. Windows 8 does offer to show two apps on screen, both half the size of your monitor. With Windows 8.1 came the possibility to show up to 4 apps on your screen. But still no possibility to steplessly increase or decrease the App like an ordinary desktop window. For that you need a third party software like Modern Mix. Maybe on your initial setup there was some kind of tool installed and you did not know. But natively that feature does not exist in any version of Windows 8 or 8.1. So I suggest you stop your wild goose chase and either get a third party tool if you really want that feature or just go on without it.

Read post #7. You will see that by then, I understood that Windows 8.1 does not "steplessly" resize apps. You will also see that I said my original 8.1 update did just that. No third party apps involved. I am the only one that uses this computer, so I can say with 100% certainty, that there was nothing on this computer that I didn't know about. It was enabled when I installed 8.1. I don't know why it was, and I have no proof, (screen shots), so you can believe it or not, doesn't really matter to me.

I post the question, because I thought Windows 8.1 just functioned that way. I understand now that it does not, and I guess I was just lucky or something, that mine did. I know I enjoyed it, and used it daily. Thanks for the help, and I shall mark this as solved again, whilst I pursue some Windows 10 geese. :winkey:
