Hit a major snag with Office 365 and domain accounts

I ran into a major issue (for me) when using Windows 8.1, domain accounts, and Office 365 subscriptions. I have a few Surface Pro 3s to set up for our VPs and CEO, and of course, one for me. I have them set to log in using our domain accounts. I also have our domain accounts synced with Office 365, so we utilize the single sign-on. All of what is working perfectly for my regular users still running Windows 7 Pro. My problem is only with the SP3 devices running Windows 8.1 Pro.

So here's the issue. These few people can log in to their SP3, and go about their work day just fine. Office 2013 works fine. However, when they click into the Store to add apps, they are prompted that they need an account. If we use their domain account to create one, it goes through and allows them to download apps. However, regular (non-business) OneDrive kicks off, and suddenly all Office 2013 apps tell the user there is a problem with their account.

What it boils down to is this. Their Office 365 accounts (same as the domain) aren't considered Microsoft accounts for some reason, so the user basically has a choice between a functioning Office 2013 product and a functioning Store account to download apps.

What is the fix, workaround, procedure, etc to have both functioning Office 365 and Windows Store accounts?

What I'm finding out is that an Office 365 account isn't actually a Microsoft account, so it looks like I may be setting up outlook.com accounts for my VPs to use with the Windows Store.
