Solved A couple of questions about Macrium Reflect

I'm using Macrium on a usb to create System Images from 2 laptops (using the usb because the program will not install onto one of the laptops and I want just one solution).

When I open the program I get a message saying that I may need to load the driver for the Network Controller. Under this is a comment that I only need to load the drivers if they are needed for an image or restore. So far I've chosen not to load the driver and the images have been created successfully. But should I be loading the driver?

Also, sometimes the process fails on one laptop because of bad blocks. I know that on the desktop version I can choose to ignore bad blocks. I can't find a way to do this on the usb. Is it possible?

And finally, do I need to keep updating the program on the usb or will it be okay if it's a somewhat out of date version?

Thanks

Hi David,

Not sure how this would work:confused:. Would it be checking the C drive for errors (which is what I need) or the usb itself?

And I forgot to mention that I'm using the free edition. I know you use the pro and it may have different options.

Usually I try to remember to do a chkdsk before I do the image, but sometimes the memory (inside my head;)) fails.

Hi David,

I can see that it runs from the usb, but does it error check the usb drive or the c drive? (or am I being even more dense in my lack of understanding than usual, which I would have to attribute to a lack of red wine tonight :D). I can't see anywhere that allows you to select a drive to error check (but then I've only looked at it, not tried it).

I want to error check the c drive before I make the image.

I don't see this on my usb drive Jim. (I'm using the Macrium recovery.iso that whs gave me a link to some time ago.) The program seems to have limited functions (just image and restore basically). I can't post screenshots as I need to boot to the usb to use it, and then don't have access to my snipping tool.

does it error check the usb drive or the c drive

If you click on Properties of the usb drive it checks the usb drive.

If you click on Properties of the C drive it checks the C drive.

I don't think this is the solution I need David (but thanks anyway). I was hoping to avoid having to check the drive by excluding any bad blocks beforehand.

When I do a Windows System Image it will still work if there are bad blockss; it just tells me they've been excluded from the image. This is good as I don't always remember to do a chkdsk first). I was hoping I could use the same setting on Macrium to save me wasted imaging attempts, but it looks like this may not be available from the usb (though I'm pretty sure it is on the free edition I installed on my laptop before).

I am assuming that I can't run this full program from a usb as I was directed to the recovery.iso by whs when having problems before. And I'd guess the full program needs to make registry entries etc.?

Things have to go on hold for a little while now as my laptop has kindly informed me that a hard disk failure could be imminent:shock:. Fortunately I have just successfully created both a Macrium and a Windows backup, and being forewarned I can make sure I back up any new data every day, so I should be okay until I get a new HDD fitted. And if I am lucky, this will maybe solve the problem of those bad blocks for me (fingers crossed emoticon needed here!).

But I'd still be interested to know if I can exclude bad blocks from a Macrium backup done using the recovery.iso...

OK.

Error checking would be good if you suspected bad sectors on C or on the usb.

There is Auto Verify too in Macrium.

a hard disk failure could be imminent

Another good reason to use error checking. :)

But I'd still be interested to know if I can exclude bad blocks from a Macrium backup done using the recovery.iso...

A good reason to get the Standard version with Auto Verify option. :)

A couple of times the backup was aborted for me because something was wrong.
I don't remember what but I fixed it & started the image again & it went ok.

Why don't don't you just make the image and verify it? If it verifies ok it will re-image ok.

I think there is some confusion creeping in here (well I'm getting confused anyway!).

Hopefully the following will clarify:

Here are screenshots from the Macrium program I am using (sorry if they are messy, I had to take photos with my camera as I can't use Windows' own snipping tool when booting from the usb):

Macrium#1.png This first is when loading, the following show the Image, Restore and Other Tasks tabs:

Macrium#2.pngMacrium#3.pngMacrium#4.png

These are the only things I can do.

@stringjunky: When I make an Image I can choose to autoverify but this doesn't happen until after the image is made. What I want to do is avoid the imageing failing in the first place because of bad sectors (this has happened to me more than once).

@David: I don't have an option to verify BEFORE making the image, as shown on your screenshot. I'm guessing the version I am using is a scaled down one, even from the free edition that I did have on my laptop. Are you running your full Macrium from your desktop or from a usb? I want a version that can run from usb and this is what I was recommended (in another thread).

Does this make sense???

You can't verify an image before it is made because the verification function checks the integrity of that image!

Makes sense Mark.

David's screenshot (post #6) actually says 'Verify the files before backup', which is essentially what I want to do - check the files are okay so the backup will succeed rather than start a backup that then fails.

But sadly doesn't appear to be possible with the usb program I am using :(. Oh well, we can't always have what we want!

You could run: sfc /scannow in Command Prompt before imaging.

You could run: sfc /scannow in Command Prompt before imaging.

I usually run dism.bat and chkdsk before creating a System Image, but sometimes I forget :(. If I forget, Windows is forgiving and still creates the Image excluding any bad blocks. But the Macrium I use from the usb goes through the process and fails. Then I have to try again.

I have seen the option to exclude bad blocks on the Macrium free version on my laptop, and was hoping this was also possible using the usb, but sadly it appears not.

I have the free ver. (5.3 64bit.)

I have this too Clint, but unfortunately it won't install on one of my laptops (no idea why, already tried to resolve this with no joy which is why I moved to the usb version - I wanted to make it simple for me by using the same system on both machines). The laptop that was suffering from bad blocks is the one where it will run from the desktop though.

Anyway, a new hard drive could get rid of the bad blocks problem for me. Otherwise maybe I'll just have to bite the bullet and use the desktop version on one laptop and the usb version on the other.

I am marking this as solved as I think it's gone as far as it can. Thanks to all contributors.
