I have a retail version of MS Office Home and Student 2007 which is installed in my Win 7 computer.

Now I have Win 8 Preview installed in VMware 4.0.2 in my Win 7 computer.

How do I use MS Home and Student 2007 in Win 8 without having to install with the DVD ?
I know I can install Home & Student using the DVD on the same computer as many time as I want, but is this Win 8 Preview considered another computer ?

Thank you.

A virtual machine is considered another computer by Microsoft and other vendors. Unless you have a 3 pc license, you cannot install and activate that copy of Office '07 in the virtual machine. Sorry:(

Yes, my retail version has 3 Home PC Licenses. It is printed at the cover box.
I used it first time on a Vista machine. 2nd time on a Win 7 machine. So I have one license left.

I asked the question because I really don't want to use up my last license as I am not sure if I will eventually buy the Release to Public version. So far I am not " gung-ho " about this win 8.

Thank you.

You can always install MS Office then uninstall it when you get the full version of Windows 8. Uninstalling Deactivates that one license so if you activate all 3 and you uninstall 1, then you would've only used up 2 out of your 3.

That comes to another question....
The vista machine which had the first license installed is no longer in service.
I did not uninstall the Home & Student from that Vista computer. Computer just went kaput.

Does that mean I have that license back and that I have used only 1 license out of 3 ?

Yes. I will warn you that you may (or may not) have to call Microsoft to activate the 3rd license if that happened. I have never had to but you may.

I assume your " Yes " means ...... in your opinion, I have still 2 licenses to use, although there may be a question mark on the 3rd one.
Yes ?

P.S. Can't give you rep point, (only 1 point anyway), because I am told to give it to someone else before I can give any to you again.

When I said "Yes" I did mean that you have 2 licenses to use. Also, I looked in the Reputation and Badges thread and it says nothing about having to Rep someone else before you rep the same person. Maybe I'm wrong, but if you see the thumps up sign in the bottom left, you can click on it and give someone rep.

Yes, there is such a rule. Same as the one in Vistax64 and Seven forum.
Go ask the people at Chill Out forum, or PM to one of the Mods.
I tried to show you by way of screenshot, but this time I don't get the Browse button.

Activating by phone will be fine if you have to --- especially if you say you have got rid of the old VISTA machine and want to install on a new one.

You might not even have to since Ms Office seems to allow quite a few activations normally before throwing up the please contact Ms screen with nr of permissible activations exceeded type of message.
In any case you probably can run it for 30 days before activating which is fine if you are just testing W8 as a Virtual Machine.

Cheers

Nothing working for me, tried all digital download versions I can get my hands on every single one fails with a bland "setup encountered an error" message, when I checked the logs in the temp folder each failure says:

Tried googling that error and attempted every solution I can find and nothing is working :(

Hi there
are you attempting to install a different language version to what your main windows language is.

Try again to completely fresh install Windows RP in English (you cam always add language packs later) and then install Office 2010 (English).

Afterwards you can also install the language pack(s) for Office 2010 of your choice.

I say go for a complete W8 re-install -- even on modest hardware it should only take around 15 - 20 mins and you know then you've got a "totally UNHOSED" i.e Clean system.

Ms should activate your office product again without a problem if it needs to be activated. I've never had problems with phone activation -- Ms are quite reasonable and know people re-install OS'es etc -- they just want to try and stop "Commercial or Large scale" piracy.

cheers

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, it's not an activation issue, the install of 8 is clean from yesterday, not an upgrade of 7, the office I'm trying to use is simply a free 60 day trial from their website with new CD Key as provided by them. It's nothing to do with activation/piracy etc. etc. it's an install problem.

Suggestion: Make sure the trial version you attempting to download is the right bit package...32bit or 64 bit. It took me awhile to figure that out doing the same thing on a PC at work. After about 30 minutes of tring I finally got it to take.

Yep I already tried both, 64bit should work fine as that's the version of my OS and what I had with 7 but I tried 32bit just to be sure. I think it's more likely to be a permissions issue, which I'm working on ;)

You are allowed to activate Office on 3 machines at a time.

There is no explicit de-activation on an old machine, so you may have to activate new installs by telephone.
