My last system i used WMC with a Hauppauge TV Tuner card, since WinTV software was not too good and unresponsive at times, Media Center worked better.

My issue now is that on my new system i have SSD as my OS drive. WMC on my other system was writing up to 2GB each day on drive, then erases it after restart or cold boot, does it again.

In this folder C:\Users\Public\Recorded TV\TempRec\TempSBF , standing for Stream Buffer Engine. This Temp file is hidden, unless you change the folder options.

Basically done for pausing, fast forwarding and reversing LiveTV. Also folder hold recordings of LiveTV.
Reason of course do not like this is constant writes it will be doing on the SSD, can't stop this function on WMC i have already asked Microsoft and researched it. Only change the size of recordings to be written, but i believe 2GB is the smallest, no matter this was not the question i have.

What i want to try to do is move this folder to my HDD, internal one, rather then make it write to the OS SSD drive.
Should be simple, but many readings show not done pretty much through WMC. This article shows a way i am not familiar with, but will it work. Change the location of the live TV buffer - Wmc Wiki
Or flash drive Using a RAM drive for the live TV buffer - Wmc Wiki

Could not understand why Microsoft did not put a settings in WMC to do this, just one to change the recording size.
Also without it will cause issues in performance is why i am not sure about changing the directory and will it work for sure. Reading about others players can do what WMC can, believe use something similar to do the same.
Any suggestions or ideas on this subject be appreciated..

I have mine on a different drive with no problems at all.
Just create a folder on the drive you want to use, then tell Media Center where it is.
Add the new folder to media libraries, then in recording change to the drive you want to use.

Never recall seeing an option in media center to change location of this folder. Even doing research online does not show it.
Can you somehow show what and where you mean to do it exactly, possibly in a pic capture.

Make a file on the drive you want to use to save your TVrecordings. Name it Recorded TV.

Now in Media Center first go to Tasksthen TV then Recorder then Media Libraries then Add folders to the library. Itwill walk you through the setup, just choose the drive and file you want touse.

After that go back to Recorder and choose Recorder Storagethen under Record on drive: choose the drive that you want to record to. That’sit.

If you like you can go back into Recorder then RecorderDefaults and see if you would like to make any changes, likes set it to onlyrecord new or all shows.

Hope this helps.

You sure this is the same as LiveTV Buffer i am talking about? Not just Recording TV through Media Center option. I do not record TV.
Media Center stores LiveTV in a buffer so you can pause, rewind and fast forward Live TV, we on same thought here or is this folder same thing ?
I had it on system before i never saw that option and i did look enough, hey, just want to be sure before i re install it.

I forgot to tell you to go back into Recorder then Media Libraries then Remove folders from the library then select remove Public Recorded TV.
That way it will not see the Public Recorded TV folder and will only save to the folder that you made.

You mean within Media center settings or from the Users folder. Think you might need to start from beginning wording it all again in one paragraph. Sorry. Make sure i have it correctly all steps.

Everything is done inside Media Center. Just follow what I typed in the posts above and you will be fine.

Hmmm....wondering why i never saw this when i used it before and looking online many never state it this way. Either registry tweaks, some other means. One on Wiki was not clear enough for me. Have to take down all you posted in each one and try it out.
Other programs that are free like Media Portal and XMBC use some similar source to do the same.

If wasn't for how bad WinTV is, i would use this as it works differently on the buffer of LiveTV and record. JRiver Media Center is another decent software, not sure how well it will work and is not free. Thank you Metalman !

This option shown more clearly by Kari on SevenForum seems as good way, also shown on Wiki Link i posted.

two options, either this as you mentioned if this in fact works for sure. Open MC, and go to Tasks\Settings\TV\Recorder\Recorder Storage.

Or

Delete the TempRec folder.
Open a CMD window as an administrator.
Change directory to the Recorded TV folder. cd c:\users\public\recorded tv
Type the following command: mklink /d TempRec <new path> (replace <new path> with the path you want to use for the live TV buffer). So to create change the buffer location to E:\Buffer\, type mklink /d TempRec E:\Buffer\
Restart the computer and WMC for the changes to take effect. Windows Media Center will now use the new path to store the live TV buffer.

Name it Buffer, but i would probably leave it E:\TempRec

Has to be done correctly in some way, because the path in the registry is going to then see it as wrong. Causing it not to work properly or other issues with WMC, also some cases i saw it goes into both location folders.

Yes, similar to using mlink in my post #10, deleting folder first then creating a link to another drive. When i install it i will look over the options you mentioned first, see what is best for it. Most research shows mlink way, but one showed through Media Center itself. Is this only for recorded or LiveTV Buffer, doing it that way through Media Center task settings. I will know when i install it again.

By the way i have new system and i just realized my WMC key will not work if i use it, it was from the other system i had before, so if i do this i first need to purchase another key i believe.

I have not had to delete any folders to make it work. Just tellit where not to save, and then tell it the new location to save the recordingor live tv buffer.

I have done this with Windows 7 and 8.1 with no problems.

Good luck with all of this, hope it works out for you.

Thanks !! Post back when i decide first what i will do, since key i have for WMC will not work on another system and will cause me to have to reinstall Win8.1 again if i did try to use this key. Sorry did not realize that when i originally posted this issue. Have new system now, that was on different system with Windows 8.1 ,WMC.

Update to thread. Well after looking over some other software for my TV tuner card with not much success i decided to go back to Windows Media Center.

Everything worked out good, following what MetalMan was telling me. Steps i took to move the TempRec folder was.............
Open WMC, and i went to Tasks\Settings\TV\Recorder\Recorder Storage selected my HDD E:
Went back to Tasks\Settings\TV\Media Libraries and removed C:\Users\Public\Recorded TV\
Believe if i did not remove original media library in WMC it would write to both areas then.

All the TempRec hidden files (Live TV Buffer) and Recorded TV are going to the E: Drive Recorded TV
Amazing after much research before this was not stated clearly enough, other alternatives was using mlink in command prompt.
Main reson was not to let this be constantly written and erased on my Main OS SSD drive.

Thanks Metalman it works good !!
