Windows 8.1 and Movie Maker 2012

Hi everyone.

I've been happily using Windows Movie Maker in Windows 7 with .mpg files. I'm halfway through a project and was recently advised to move to Windows 8/8.1 so I backed everything up, saved my project and video files and took the plunge with Windows 8.

Having installed Movie Maker I loaded in my project. I had to repoint to my video files but that was fine. However, although I can hear the sound, I now can't see any video! On checking with Microsoft I should be able to use .mpg files so can anyone advise me as to what I'm doing wrong? I've tried re-naming to .mov and .mpeg, all to no avail, yet they all play fine in Media Player.

I really don't want to have to re-install Windows 7 but if I have to then so be it.

Many thanks.

It probably has to do with the missing codecs that is removed in Windows 8.1 unless you buy the media center pack for $10 USD.
