    Update for Works Database

I have some Microsoft Works Database files I'd like to continue using, although MS Works has long disappeared. Does anyone know of a conversion technique/program to make these DB files usable with Microsoft Office. Seems like a step backward to not allow some kind of conversion for these files. I really liked Works DB.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

What version of Works was used to create these files and what version of Office are you using now.

As to Works, I have no idea what version it was. I lost it when I got rid of my old computer. The "Word" version is 2007.

According to Microsoft, For works 6.0 or later, you can just open the file in Excel and save it as a .xlsx and go from there. Make sure when you are doing File -> Open you select All Files (*.*).

If its older than that, you have to use the Conversion Wizard :

    1. Start Word
    2. On the File menu, point to New, and then click More Word Templates.
    3. Click the Other Documents tab.
    4. Click Batch Conversion Wizard, and then click OK.
    5. Follow the instructions on the screen to run the Conversion Wizard.

Thanks for the suggestions, Jakester, but neither one worked. When I try to open it in Excel is said "file type not valid," and it has a ".csv" at the end.
When I start Word, go to File menu, then New, I don't get a "More Word Templates" option.
I guess I just have to face losing the info, and will try to re-create it some other way.
    Thanks again.

I use LibreOffice 4.0 for most of my Works needs even though I have Works 9 installed on my Win7 64-bit. It's free and can open and work with a variety file types including Office. I gave up on OpenOffice 4 as it dropped support for Works files. As a test I created an .xlr file in Works 9, saved it, closed Works and used Open with to choose LibreOffice Calc, looks fine. I could use Save As and choose a different format, there's several including Excel and Lotus 1-2-3.

Alternatively, LibreOffice (or its Calc component) might or should open a .csv (comma-spaced values) spreadsheet file, and save to a different Microsoft Office extension without destroying the original.

A potential risk is the loss of data during the conversion. That is a given.

It has been eons since I used a Works file, but LibreOffice's predecessor might have offered a query as to how the file should be opened as. Any loss of data, either values or formatting, would be clearly seen then.
