Safe Download Site?

Since CNet stung me with tenacious Adware installed with no notice or opportunity to refuse I now fear all software collection download websites. But, some programs (e.g. Unlocker) redirect you to these. Is there a safe/adware/malwarefree download website anymore?

download.com as far as I can tell is bug free. But adding urls to posts in here seems to be taboo. I have just had a thread removed.

FileHippo.com - Download Free Software is or was trustworthy.

They have older versions of software too.

edit---

It pays to pay careful attention when downloading or installing software.

I click on the "Advanced" button in an installer because they hide unwanted crap there often.

It's like installing Flash.
You need to un-tick the box that says "Install Chrome", if you don't want it.

Ninite: I'm giving it a trial, it downloaded a couple of items I thought I had, and it said that some did not require their help.

I'm well aware of the uncheck issue. The incident with CNet I refer to it did not provide a decline box, it just silently installed an intractable piece of junk.

Used to love CNET - been caught out a few time before I realised what was going on.

Cnet is accused of bundling malware with downloads- The Inquirer

Hi there

Many sites try to trick you by offering a number of download buttons to choose from.
Most of those buttons contain an unwanted add on, whereas only one will be OK.
I tend to move on to another site rather than make a wrong choice.
