To me the whole thing revolves around the apps, if there are 1,000's of great ones then I can see Metro catching on, if there are only going to be 300 or so average apps then I don't see are really good future for Windows 8.

Also hopefully there will be a better way to manipulate the apps then what the Metro UI is offering us now.

Those Metro apps should have a close button and windows controls at least. That should be an advantage over apps of iPads or Androids.

Win 8 automatically suspends apps when not in focus so they take up next to no space in the system so why do you want a close button?

I use Win 8 on a desktop PC and rarely use Metro anyway. Just to log-in at the start and close down later.

I disabled UAC a month ago and now none of the MS Metro apps will run. I may NEVER KNOW if there are any good apps out there as the store app will not run... Funny thing is that I did not notice for over 3 weeks! I got bored enough to go look at the Metro screen today...

What sort of "apps" are we talking about? I use Opera, Word Perfect, Media Player, Quicken, and Paint Shop Pro. Every now and then I'll use the calculator or Google Earth.

Just went out and looked at the "apps" that are currently available. It looks like most are somethng that I can accomplish easily with my browser.

An operating system should not depend on apps in the first place. That said those that come with W8 may well kill it....:D

What's next, games included with the server versions?

Cheers, ;)

I use three of the news apps, the pinball app, the weather app, and about four games. I just started using their cloud app to store some documents. Granted, I could download it all for free from other sources and put them on Windows 7, but I like the way they work.

Why do we need a close button on Metro apps? So we can close it whenever we want it right there on the spot without making the computer wait till they get idle for it to terminate them automatically.

And I believe I am not the only one who believes that.

You can drag the top of the app to the bottom of the screen and it closes.

Look at the world around you. Smart phones and their applications are changing the way most people expect to be able to access information. Even the elderly who are usually reluctant to adopt newer technology mediums are commonly seen using smart phones. I really believe that once 8 is released the apps market will offer a lot more and be comparable to what we access on our phones and will be successful.

Yes I know that but a close button would be more obvious and takes a single click than dragging it to the bottom. A single click takes less effort than dragging right?

That sounds so much easier than just clicking on a button to close a program.
Nope, not for me who uses a mouse. I don't use a touchscreen. Plus a close button is more obvious and there would be no harm if there is a close button and window controls too.

Agreed.
It's sheer idiocy to have to drag something off of the screen to close it.

Even on a tablet, it's easier to press on an "X", than it is to drag something off of the screen.

I still haven't heard a reason why you'd WANT to close a Metro app?

Of course I want to close it when I don't need it anymore or if I'm done using it so that I can move on to the next task. I want a visible close button to do that for me without waiting for it to get idle for the computer to terminate it automatically or without the need to drag to at the bottom that takes more effort than a single click and I don't understand why someone like you would ask a question why the need to close it when the reason is very obvious.

Sorry, I don't mean to wind you up Vertex, but there is no "of course" about it! When you finish with a Metro app and move on to something else, Win 8 takes care of things. I always have several applications (not apps) running all day such as photoshop, lightroom, thunderbird email, several browser windows, several desktop explorer windows.... If your PC is capable of running Win 8 it is by definition capable of working with Win 8's handling of apps. So I am genuinely surprised by why you'd worry so much about a new method of working that Microsoft have presumably designed deliberately. That's all.

I am afraid that Windows 8 seems to break many of the Taboos that Windows OS versions have created over the years. The taboo about switching off your machine, and the conflict with "closing down properly" is hard for many. So is "task switching" and having "too many windows open" because your machine will run out of resources and grind to a halt and BSOD. Even the BSOD is seen as a failure, whereas it is really a safety mechanism to prevent your PC from damaging itself.
What would suit many people would be the return of "Clippit", to reassure them that it's OK:
