windows 8.1 and skype auto start up

Skype on 8.1 is driving me bonkers. When I look in the task manager->start up its not listed.

However, I then get messages and calls - so it must be running

Of course, with the tile version there are no settings that I can find to turn the darn thing off and it doesn't appear in the system tray.

How can I please take control over skype so that it launches when I want it to?

You could uninstall the Windows 8 app (right click on the start screen select Uninstall) and download the desktop version if you prefer. Download Skype for Windows

I prefer the desktop version personally.

yes, that's an option. Seems odd to me that the app version is limited.

    thanks for reply

You can set yourself Offline in Skype App and only change the status Online when you want to be available. It's as easy as launching Skype and closing it when you want to be offline.
