I don't use and I have an activation code for anyone who is interested. Be clever and tell me why you should have it.

Lol, I've got one I don't use either!
Generous of you! :)
I often wondered if they were system specific keys!? Naw..., should work.
Wanna trade and find out!? :D ;)

If those are the limited time offer free ones, there was a "use by" date tied to them. I used one of mine after the expired date and it still worked though. Some other forum members weren't so lucky though. I only mention it because activation isn't done until after you've upgraded and rebooted. Then its too late to go back and you're stuck with a system that won't activate. Don't get me wrong, it's nice to give them away. I just don't want to see it backfire on you is all. They also aren't transferable once activated on a PC. Not easily anyway. I managed to move one by doing a phone activation when the original PC died and I wanted to move Media Center to its replacement. I didn't even have to talk to a real person, I did it all though the automated phone activation system.

EDIT: Those free keys are good for upgrading 8.0 Pro and 8.1 Pro. I've used the same key for both on the same PC with no issues.

I couldn't find anything connecting Silverlight to the Media Center.

I have the Media Center but do not use it.
Just Flash & Silverlight.

I hope this info is useful. :)

edit--- I do get updates for Silverlight through Windows Update---

Hi there

What on earth does Windows Media Centre do that things like VLC don't -- I mean WMC can't even play FLAC music (uncompressed) without making a "mod" and who needs proprietary formats like WMA these days !!.

Also ever tried playing a COMMERCIAL DVD with WMC -- there's all sorts of Region Crud and NTSC/PAL issues. VLC simply PLAYS any DVD any region - and as Windows 8.1 can mount Virtual ISO's you can create an ISO of your DVD and play it with VLC - no problem.

To me WMC was fine back in the "Pre-Streaming" days and Terrestial Analog TV -- now it's an OLD DINOSAUR - totally redundant on almost any system you care to name.

And VLC is 100% FREE too !!!! - I guarantee there won't be a codec that you can find that it can't handle -- or at least all "the usual suspects" !!!.

You can also use VLC to STREAM both video and audio too if you want.

WMC is no good either for these sort of services (SKY TV for example).

Cheers
jimbo

I had a key for it, installed it initially while still on Win8 and got rid of it in a hurry, nothing worked on it that I needed. Replaced everything with my all time favorites, VLC and KM Player (now Daum), TV card and IPTV services have their own players anyway.

I use it because it was free and it plays what I want to watch. IMHO it's easy to navigate and use and it looks nice. It all depends on what you do with it. If it works why not use it? Just because it doesn't suit your needs, doesn't necessarily mean its junk and to be avoided like the plaque, as some would have you believe. Just my 2 cents.
