Solved Windows 8 app preview?

Honestly haven't used any of the apps to any extent. But when I went to open a .png file on my desktop and big red screen took over and then a box that said there was an app installed for it. IIRC I clicked on it and the windows picture viewer (?) came up displaying the picture file. Up at the top was a yellow barred section that said something like app preview. I don't know how to exit the app, there wasn't a button or arrow so I hit the windows key and it took me back to the metro desktop. When I tried to switch over to the regular desktop the still displaying picture was there. I had to hit the windows desktop app to get to a clear screen. Okay what did I do wrong??

Two ways to exit a running app:

• Move the mouse pointer to the top of the screen till it changes to hand symbol.
• Drag the app to the bottom of the screen.

• In metro start menu move the mouse pointer to the upper ledt corner of the screen.
• When preview thumbnail appears right click on thumbnail and close app.
