On Windows 8.1 I installed 8Gadgetpack to bring back the Windows 7 sidebar, and for the most part it works great except for one thing, when I click show desktop (or press win+D) it hides the gadgets as well. Is there a way to prevent this without having to press win+G all the time after showing desktop?

From the software developers site 8GadgetPack - Gadgets for Windows 8 / 8.1

When I click on "Show Desktop" or press Win+D the gadgets disappear!
This problem occurs in Windows 8.1. The feature that keeps the gadgets visible in Windows 7/8 depends on a backdoor that was removed in Windows 8.1, so there is nothing I can do about it. You can try to use Win+M or Win+, instead to get similar behaviour.

Oh well that's a bummer. Are there any disadvantages to sticking with Windows 8.0 instead of 8.1 then?

Sorry this is starting to be a bit off topic but so are you saying 8.1 isn't just a service pack of 8.0, so I'm not missing out on security fixes by downgrading to 8.0? I use Startisback anyway so lack of smaller start screen icons/boot to desktop doesn't bother me.

No problem :) 8.1 is a new version - the kernel changed. However Windows 8 is still supported for another 2 years and you will still receive security updates. There are hardware requirement differences also - some people can't upgrade.

New kernel eh? Is it any better? (I did hear of mouse lag issues but it seems to have been fixed)

I imagine microsoft think it is better. You just have to decide if the issue with 8GadjetPack is more important than the 8.1 changes.

If you are already on 8.1 to go back to 8 you need to clean install though - you can't downgrade.

Well there was also a hack to disable DWM in Windows 8 that doesn't really work well in 8.1 but some people have said it works fine in 8.0. Anyway this is for a new PC, thanks for the tips. I was actually debating whether to use W8 or W7 because I have a Windows 8 license with downgrade rights.
