    Slow app loads

Boot time is reasonable, but the first apps to load take far too long (up to 90"), and occasionally do not respond.
Once the system has been 'up' a while, apps load OK. Multitasking is sluggish (with a high quality I7 processor).

The prime suspects, as deduced via multiple event viewer errors, include MsMpEng.exe, which appears to be Windows Defender, and WIA hanging.

Typical ALPHA software woes, I'll wager, and this is just FYI ... yet suggestions are always welcomed.

    Hi,

I wouldn't blame Windows not even slightly.

It is working excellent here and it is not the issue in any way. Consider it a purchasable product as it stands.

If I were you, I would open the device manager and one by one, visit the manufacturers' sites to install the latest drivers for each.

If you have a 3rd party antivirus installed, uninstall it with its removal tool and then install MSE to replace it.

    Good luck!

Other than that, a nice HDD defrag for all of your spinning drives would not hurt. For 8, I highly recommend Auslogics.

Thanks for the suggestions. A bit more background here. Win 7, on another drive, runs the very same hardware and programs with no errors, and all drivers are the latest available.

No 3rd-party A/V ever. When Windows 8 was first installed to this SATA drive a prompt indicated that MSE wasn't compatible.

Been done several times. After Windows 8 is up for several minutes it runs reasonably well, but for the occasional "not responding" and drive thrashing. Few apps are installed and all the latest versions: Firefox, Thunderbird (mail), a clipboard utility, Terabyteunlimited's Image For Windows, CCCleaner, Irfanview (image viewer) and a Canon MP210 printer/scanner device. Telnet and Windows Fax/Scan are configured.

Also regularly seeing "phantom" icons on the taskbar. They vanish when clicked.

First thing that comes to mind is that, and of course it is your choice here - that you should disable the Windows Search service. It commonly slows things down and creates that drive thrashing you speak of. Almost any enthusiast I know of and even ones I don't lol all disable this. It's the first thing I do basically after an install.

    services.msc

You will still be able to find things by typing in Metro etc... What it will do though is make Windows take a little longer if you search for specific files that only you have on your machine.

I would also disable Windows Image Acquisition.

Reboot after for good measure and see how things go. Maybe myself or others will have more suggestions.

Hi, I just faced the same problem, but after following a simple proceedure, it works fine now:

    1. go to: Command Prompt (in administrator mode) // deutsch: Eingabeafforderung (administrator)
    2. type: SFS/SCANNOW and press enter

It fixed my problem even before the test finishes. I hope it help you too.
