Store doesn't open

I have been avoiding the store, and any of the "apps" available from the Metro start screen. I just don't like it on a PC, don't care for the "apps" and don't want the intrusive integration of my user account into online Microsoft accounts and other types of accounts.

However, I wanted to get hold of the MS games and it appears that in order to get them, you are "forced" to set up an account and used the store. Problem is; the store won't open. It flashes up with a green background, then minimizes again. Seems impossible to get it to simply display the store window. The behaviour is unfamiliar to me; never experienced a normal application behaving this way.

I have previously used the store ONCE to obtain some upgrade.
I had huge problems then (same thing), and spent hours searching for the fix until I eventually found it.
Lots of people was experiencing the problem, but the fix was not easy to find and most users were simply advised by junior MS staff to re-install Windows afresh.

There WAS a fix, I don't remember how (something in the Registry..maybe...?)
I am hoping that somebody here knows, before I start re-tracing my steps from December to find the solution again.

Oh what a big fail by MS. Nobody asked for this ridiculous store to begin with. It's a regression when the games previously came pre-installed, and now you have to use this poxy store to get them. But the store FAILS.
And the whole internet is LITTERED with people trying to get it to work, and being told by "helpful" drones to re-install Windows.
<end rant>

I reviewed the list that Edwin linked to. Thanks...!

the Store may not start at all
- it's not that. It looks like it's starting, but behaves abnormally. Won't stay focussed and can't see the process store.exe running at all. And "Change PC settings" from the Charm is working.

powershell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $Env:SystemRoot\WinStore\AppxManifest.XML
Executed this (note, must be done in admin elevated prompt or it fails with a cryptical message).
Did not help either... I realise I need an online account, but I'll get that once I can at least get the Store to start.

If you get the 0x8007064A error in quotes below, then it means that the Packages registry key below does not have System set as it's owner.
The owner was already System.

What do I do now...?

Working my way through the list but am 2/3 through with no luck as of yet.

Trying to clear the store cache gives this error.

Thanks Brink, for posting the list. I see you made it. :) It's really really good and I think that's how I fixed the problem last time I got it. This time it appears unsolvable though. It's ridiculous to spend any more time on it.

This problem seems to be incredibly common, and I don't see why MS doesn't make a tool that goes through all potential causes and applies the fixes as needed.

Applying the Registry fix from the list TOTALLY destroyed the machine. Fortunately I had a clone from a few months back, and keep the user folder on a different drive. I couldn't even re-import my backup, I lost control of everything. I REALLY don't see how it could happen because I followed the instructions and am perfectly familiar with the Registry and changing. Guess something went wrong but I am really not sure what it was.

Since Microsoft can't provide a tool to fix this, I'm going to get hold of the games via some other mean [...] since I can't use the Store. Sorry MS, I tried.:(

Got this working on my laptop after working my way through the list.
Still not working on my maine PC and I followed all the advice.
I can't believe MS - this is junk. The internet is LITTERED with people who are having this problem.

The problem is that the Store just doesn't start at all.
It does not give any error message.

You didn't see the first part of the thread where I complained about being told to re-install for something that is very clearly due to some minor setting being off, or very localised file corruption.

That's not a helpful idea either way. It takes over a day to re-install all software and tweak the OS.
I was aware of that option from the beginning and I'd rather not use the store, than re-install for the sake of using it.

Darn Microsoft for this waste of time! Problem still outstanding. Wasted literally a day of my weekend on this.
Well, I know where I'll get my apps from then, and it won't be their store.

Martienne,

If you have gone through all the listed troubleshooting items in the tutorial below and nothing has helped, then you may have a bigger issue than you think and may need to either refresh or reset Windows to sort this. :(

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/21051-apps-tiles-not-working-responding-fix-windows-8-a.html

Not a chance that I'll do that. Everything else is running fine and the build is stable.
Rubbish of MS to have applications that are so messed up with the rest of the OS that it's impossible to do a clean re-install of the app, but needing to reset the whole darn machine to fix an issue with one app out of hundreds.

Alternatively, if they know it's a problem (and they should - it's all over the internet) they should build an automatic troubleshooter for it, that methodically goes through all known reasons for it not working, and patch where the fault is present.

On the positive side, it means I won't be wasting any money in their store and will have to resort to other means of getting my software. So much for trying to be legit.
