Canon MP280 multifunction scanner not recognized

The software for the Canon MP280 is automatically installed but the scanner is not recognized by programs such as Paperport. When I try to use the installation CD that came with the MP280 it starts the process of installation and gets to the install screen and tells me that a printer is already in use and that I should reboot and try again. The same message comes back after following the install process from the CD again.
Everything works just fine with Windows 7 and I have no idea of even how to begin looking for a solution. Anyone have any ideas on what my next step should be?
Thanks

does the canon mp280 use a TWAIN driver? twain drivers are not supported under x64 (64-bit) as far as I know. you can see if your software can support the 32-bit twain driver. otherwise, you have to hope that your scanning software has custom support for your device. check to see what driver support there is. canon (like most hardware manufacturers) try to push people to buy new devices rather than add legacy support.

i have an old scanner as well and I use the 32-bit Photoshop which does support the twain driver as the 64-bit version does not. for my other major scanning software (ABBYY), it does support the scanner.
