Solved Apps List suddenly grouped by letter

Hi all,

When I turned on my computer today, I noticed that my apps list in the start menu now has letter groups, rather than just being in a short list. Considering most of the letters only have one app, it's not really necessary.

I'm guessing this happened in some windows update. Is there any way to disable this and just have it in a nice clean list as it was before, without the letters?

Thanks!

As you can see in my screenshot, my apps are sorted by name, and that's how I have always kept them. However, when I turned on my computer today, while still sorted by name they are now also grouped by letter. As you can see in the tutorial you linked, there are no letter headers separating the apps in "by name" sorting method.

In fact, my laptop which is also running Windows 8.1, though it hasn't been updated in a while, still has no letter sections, while my desktop (in screenshot) does.

In Windows 8.1 Update, the sort by name option had the letters added as well.

That is, for lack of a better word, stupid if it can't be turned off. It just adds more clutter, which is why I uninstalled half the preloaded apps in the first place. It is not helpful in any way to users who don't have tons of apps installed. None of the other sort methods were appealing but I guess I will have to switch after all.

silly Microsoft, adding things for me that I never asked for (and forcing it on us).

+1

I just came looking for this SAME thing. They literally raped and pillaged windows this go around. I have spent more time cleaning up my pc than using the darn thing. A reformat is a nightmare to such a degree i finally began using image software.

Anyways, if anyone has come up with any way around this mess...

Its horrendous, I have all my apps in the sections they were designated with ie: Final fantasy XIV has a Square enix header etc. Then I have ONE app from microsoft which positions itself all the way to the left with a big P and thats PC Settings. Looks abysmal so I use category format instead. This positions it to the right and places it in an "Other" category of which I cannot change. UGHGH!!

I can delete the shortcut but then i lose out on having PC settings work in the charm bar. I used to hide it and just unhide if i needed it but SURPRISE, they disabled the hide checkbox as well. Good times :)

I would be using Windows 10 full time already but their are just too many issues yet. Teaming doesnt work, Gaming is a bit of a pickle. I'll give it a few months and then im ooooutta here :p

BTW is their plans for a "tenforums"? lol
